so embarrasing... So last night was Lucy's puppy training class, it's our second week at stage 2 Anyway, last night the trainer decided that instead of puppy socialization with other puppies we were going to play "pass the puppy" so our pups could interact with other humans. Well Lucy loved this part, and everytime she got passed, she would pee, I know she does this when she gets excited, but we had taken her out before class and once in the middle of class. I was so embarassed, no one elses dog was doing this and everytime i looked up someone was going to get the paper towels and disinfectant and cleaning up. Will she outgrow this stage? |
Aw, i can understand your embarassment, but at the same it's kind of endearing that she gets so excited. I hope it was just a little pee. I wish I could help you understand this, but i have no experience with it, when Vinnie pees he means business! |
My sisters Ada "piddles" everytime I touch her or she sees me!! Im not sure why some do it but I think it is fairly common she is just so happy she pees!!! |
This has a name and it's common. They typically grow out of it. Training will actually help her become more confident and do this less often. Don't just pass her to new people. Let her approach them and have them ignore her for a minute until she calms down. That might help. Didn't the trainer have any advice for you??? |
Don't be embarrassed. It will pass. Kacee did this when she was a puppy, too. It's just submissive urination, but it will go away in time. |
I can understand how embarrassing that could be, although i have not experienced excitement peeing. My little Benjamin seems to get an erection when he is excited to see me come home or some one new... It grosses me out a little.. but better then mopping the floor everyday |
My friend's baby golden retriever does this if you basically look at her, let alone touch her, call her name, etc. The vet said that she MIGHT grow out of it, but she is unsure. I would suggest putting puppy diapers on her when you go to class so she doesn't do this next time and if she does no one will know. I've seen puppy diapers at the pet store for dogs in heat, but at my training class a dog was wearing them because he kept trying to mark the female dogs. They seemed to work well, and the dog's owner would just take the diapers off right after they stepped out of the trainers. I can only imagine how mortified you must have felt!!! |
It was def. from excitement and not nervousness, the trainer just said that some puppies do this and it's like saying "here's some flowers" or something like that. Lucy gladly went on to each new person without any hesitation, the person would call her over and she would gladly run. So I don't think it was because I wasn't near, but i'm not sure. |
When are they supposed to out grow it?? Ada is over 2 years old now |
My fletch did this with 2 particular people for awhile but I think he grew out of it. he has not done it in a long time! thank god bc I felt soooo bad whenever he did it! and embarrassed! |
Its usually a puppy thing, fingers crossed she grows out of it :) |
Demi's 5.5 years old and still does it. I think it's cute! I wish I could experience that level of utter joy! I just have her greet people on the front porch or have a paper towel ready. |
Hopefully you have an gleefully excited puppy that will grow out of it quickly. :aimeeyork But just in case..... I had a rescue that had a horrible problem with submissive urination (murder on the couch and carpet when she was jumping everywhere). Through a lot of research and good resources, I discovered that often in the wild, submissive dogs urinate to show respect for the dominant dog and to show (in the wonderful smell of their urine) that they mean no harm. She did this for my husband, and if he would react "in a good way" to her to calm her down, it got worse - trying to reinforce her desire to please him and not challenge him. So as Erin suggested, I would also suggest while you're waiting for her to outgrow this, keep an eye out to make sure that you don't suspect submissive urination. That way, you can start training her on confidence building right away. But hopefully it's just a goofy puppy thing. I think I'd put some fancy pants on Lucy. ;) |
