How long does it take a new puppy to adjust?? Stewie has been here for 9 days and he still acts like he did the first day he got here...Is this normal? |
They're all different, and it depends on how much socialization he got before he came to you. Some take longer than others to adjust. When we brought Jake home, he sniffed everything out and then my husband and I got down on the floor and played with him. Within 10 min., he knew how to fetch. He seemed to settle right in. But, he was very well socialized while at the breeder's. How old is your puppy? Age makes a difference also. If he's very young, it might take him longer to adjust. ETA: Did you take him to your vet for a checkup right after you got him? |
Honestly, I dont hink so, at least not in my experiances. Mine took just a few days but I am sure every fur baby is different...maybe someone else can help ya more.... Has he been to the vet since you got him?? Ar eyou sure he is feeling okay?? |

What is he doing that makes you feel he's not adjusting. We've only had Sebastian for one day, and he's starting to fit in. |
It took Dolce about four days to completely adjust. Nine days semms a bit long but all dogs are different. I would try to do things to boost her confidence. |
Well I took him to two different vets and he has checked out perfect at both of them.. They said that he is just a laid back little guy.. He tested negative for internal parasites and he is not hypoglycemic. He barks and growls and plays with Kallie all the time and he follows me everywhere when he is out of the xpen but he won't play with me or kiss me or lick or come to me if I get down on the floor. He cries for me alot and when I reach to pick him up he ducks like I am going to hit him.. When I pick him up he puts his head close to me and you can hear this real faint whine. He refuses treats of any kind but will eat with no problem.. They eat 2 times per day and as soon as I set the bowl down he eats.. I call his name and he just ignores me.. I would love for someone close to me to meet him and see what they think because he treats me the same as he does strangers. He just acts like he is terrified of me and I have never even raised my voice at him.. I do not believe that he was socialized at the breeders because their kennel a seperate building from their house and he was in there with his mother.. She did keep him until he was 11 weeks. He is now 12 wks old |
Hmmm....my Stewie adjusted pretty quickly, but I think it's because the breeder had several children and the puppies were in the house with them. Are you working on commands? Right now with my boy we're working on "come" - this seems to be the one we have the hardest time with. Is he a tiny baby? My Stewie is itty, and also seems to cower when we reach out to lift him. What else is your boy doing that makes you think he's taking a while to adjust? |
There were 2 pups in the litter that we got Brody from. He acted as if he was born and raised here. We went back and got his brother Benny. It has been 2 weeks and Benny is just now settling in. He seems to be our little introvert whereas Brody is our extrovert. I think sometimes it just takes time....Esp since you have already had him checked out at the vet....So just love him and play with him...I think he will come around |
Jake was the only pup in the litter, but he was still very well socialized because he was raised in the house with other dogs and people around. He did seem shy at first, but we just let him roam around and check things out. He would do as you described, kind of duck down when we would go to pick him up. But, after we started getting down in the floor with him, he opened up and was playing with us and jumping around on us. At 12 weeks, you really should be free feeding him. Leave food and fresh water out for him all the time. That way, he can eat when he needs to. They need to eat more often when they're this young. Try getting down in the floor with him with treats and teach him the "come" command. You'll be surprised how fast these little ones catch on. Play with him alot with toys in the floor and talk really softly to him. He's just a little unsure right now, and it's probably because he was kept in a separate building from the breeder's house. He's probably just not very well socialized. Since he cries for you, it shows that he is bonding with you. It's just gonna take him a little more time, that's all. |
