Blood drawn from jugular...what does everyone think? Ellie had her bile acid test and they took the blood from her jugular vein. I know this is common practice but just read something about it being dangerous, especially for small animals. I know that noone here likes the idea of anything stuck into a Yorkie's neck but balance that with the fact that that is where they get a good sample from. What do you all think? Should I insist that they do it in the leg next time (maybe resulting in a small sample)? |
I just started vet school three weeks ago and prior to that had never heard of blood being taken from the jugular vein. I'd only ever seen it taken from the cephalic vein in the front leg, but I knew it could be taken from the saphenous vein in the hind limb too. Apparently the jugular is much easier to find than the cephalic vein. I was also told that taking blood from the cephalic vein is more painful. I mean..I'm new to all this so I haven't had a lot of experience with personally drawing blood...but it is a common practice to take blood from the jugular vein. So far I haven't heard of any disadvantages....I'm assuming if your vet is stupid they could tear the vein which would be pretty bad... |
MyFairLacy, I read online (who knows if it's true) that there are a few vets that think it is horrifying to draw from the jugular. They say that with the head tilted back other veins/arteries come to the front also making them an easy accidental hit, thus causing hemorrhage. This is especially true in small dogs where everything is so close together. Making it worse is long hair obstructing a clear view. I dunno. |
