puppy biting question. I would so appreciate some advice on my puppy biting. She is 8 weeks old and goes for our fingers and toes and it hurts. I have been telling her no and giving her a toy instead of my finger, but it isn't working very well. What have you all had success with for this problem? |
LOL Sorry....I feel your pain. Or, I did when Abigail was teething. I think I can speak for all here 'owned' by Yorkies when I say it's part of puppyhood ya just hafta get through. Her gums hurt and itch - she's just doing what instincts tell her to do to help the process of getting her teeth in. Continue letting her know it's not acceptable behavior by withdrawing attention when she bites flesh, and replace toes and fingers with a chew toy. And, remember: "This, too, shall pass" ;). |
At only 8 weeks old, she is VERY young. It's not her fault, she is just teething. Keep substituting a chew toy when she starts although fingers and toes feel sooooooo much better. She's really so young, you can hardly discipline her sternly. As she gets older, it will get easier to redirect her and train her. Good Luck! |
Winstin is doing the same thing. I just bought him a puppy kong at one of our pet stores and you can get healthy treats for in it. My vet also said you can put peanut butter in it. Winstin loves it and I have not put anything in it yet. It was under six bucks. |
I would put down a piece of ice. Gizmo loves to chew on it, lick and play with it. It helps numb the gums a little. Do you have any safe chew sticks? Bully sticks or pixie stix?? Those are great! Gizmo will be six months on Sunday and he is teething something fierce. Tonight he yelped while he was chewing his semi-soft food! :( And he's biting my hand a lot too right now. I ordered him some pixie stix and that is helping. I redirect him to one of those. Good luck and just know that you're not alone. :) |

You might want to try putting a chew toy in the freezer. One that I used for Jake was a PetStages toy. It's a ring toy, but I'm sorry I can't think of the name of it. I did that for Jake when he was teething, and he seemed to really love it. Ice cubes work good too. Since she's so young, it's hard to really discipline her and teach her yet. In a few weeks, you will be able to tell her "NO" sternly, but don't yell because that will only scare her and confuse her. Something that worked for us was to make a yelping sound like they do when they get hurt. That gets their attention, then you say "NO" sternly and redirect them to a chew toy. It worked great for us. Good luck! ETA: You can also try "Bitter Apple". It's a spray that you can get at the pet store. I put that on things I didn't want Jake chewing on, and I also even put it on my feet because he would nip at my feet. That put a stop to all chewing and biting on my feet. After a couple times, I didn't even have to spray it anymore. He would just see the bottle and go on to something else lol |

Madeleine is almost 5 months and she is still chewing at fingers and toes. I just try to give her other things to chew on. |
I would give mine a kong with frozen yoqurt or peanut butter to chew on |
