Naming an older dog? Okay, I have posted in two different places that we will be fostering an older dog real soon. He is coming tomorrow night. No one knows his name because he was a stray, and when I asked the girls at our vet's office they said they were calling him Geezer or Old Man. I don't think I want to do that and will probably give him a new name. I am thinking maybe Norman. Now, how do we do that? Is it the same as a puppy? Do we just use it ALL the time? Will he figure it out? I have never done this before. Tonight we are getting a blanket or towel with his scent so that we can introduce it to Sophie. Hopefully this will help her with the transition too. I would appreciate all the help I can get on this foster thing. Thanks for your help. |
You're doing a wonderful thing! I think you'll know the dog's true name once he's settled in your home. For instance, my Stewie is called Magoo more often than Stewie. I think Norman is a great name! Have a wonderful time, and I hope that everyone adjusts quickly for you. |
I would use the name just like with a puppy. I'm sure he'll get used to it. I wanted to add that's a real good idea to introduce the blanket to Sophie. When I got Bella I remember to bring a couple of her toys with her, but I never thought of showing anything of hers to Rocky so he would get used to her. |
I think you just do the same as with a puppy, keep calling him the new name. He will get used to it. I think your name choice is a good one, and I think you're doing a wonderful thing! Good luck and please do post pics! |

Yep..just repeat the name over and over again and he will pick it up...I have rescued a few older dogs who didnt have names or names that didnt suit them and they picked up their new names very quickly...what kind of dog are you fostering..a yorkie?? Dawn |
Yes, we are fostering a male Yorkie about 12 years old. He is a sweetie with a REAL bad hair cut, hence, the name Norman! He has cataracts and three teeth, poor guy. He is heartworm negative, and his heart sounds good. We will be looking for a new home for him soon, and our vet will neuter him next week sometime if no one comes to claim him. :aimeeyork :) |
Wow 12 years old...lucky guy to have you to foster him!! Can you post some pictures of him when he comes to stay with you..Id love to see "norm" lol... Dawn |
No worries, I had many of my rescues come in without a name and soon learned to come to their new name. Sometimes when they got adopted out they had to learn a new name again but you know that old saying "call me anything you want but don't call me late to dinner" thing.:D |

Best of luck with your foster...whatever you call him. He is one lucky dog. Be warned...we fostered our first about 1 month ago and she lasted about 2 days as a foster...before we adopted her!!!!!!!!!! Molly is a senior too and she is amazing. I wish you all the best. Lynn |

Lucky Norman! That's a great name too. It's a wonderful thing you're doing. |
That's great!!! I bet you will love having 2!!! |
That is wonderful that you are fostering an older pup. Seniors are great companions and will surprise you because they even play like pups. Warmly, Deborah |
PS I think Old Geezer and Old Man is demeaning simply because he is a senior. Charlie is 10, rescue and has various names. Charlie was his name when Mr. Porter was his master six years ago. So, I kept Charlie, Charlie Barley, Mr.Wiggles, Buddy because he is so animated when I come home from work. |
Great News For all who responded, I have great news. I had just answered the door to get the towel and the little guy's stuffed monkey with his scent when the phone rang. It was our vet. She had just received a call from the little guy's owners. He is actually 14! They have had him since 1993, and he just got away. They were looking for him everywhere, and they saw the ad in the paper today. I don't know how long he was missing, but he was taken to the vet on Monday. Great news, and now he has his REAL forever home. Thank you all for your help. I knew that Yorkie talkers were great helpers. |
Oh, I am so glad to hear the good news. Warmly, Deborah |
Aww...that is so heart warming :) I was just gonna post that my grandmother would really really love to adopt 'norm' but I live too far away anyway, I suppose. So I am glad to see he is 'home'. :D :animal-pa |
That is so sweet of you to take in this older dog. Im sure if you say the new name often he will learn that is his name. We have rescued lots of animals, and we always use a name for them until they find their forever homes. A few of the older dogs we played the guessing name game. we would just sit there with them and say name after name and some times they react to certin names, not sure if we guessed the right name or maybe it was just close. but thats the name we always ended up with. Cant wait to see pictures. |
Opps I just read your update. Im so glad he found his family, now Im wondering what the little mans name was. lol |
You can change his name just like you do with a little one. Just use it all the time when you are talking to him. He'll catch on fast once he sees all the loving he is going to receive. |
I am so glad to hear the good news . Its so heartwarming to hear happy ending . |
I would have loved to see the reunion.:) |

Did you happen to find out what his REAL name is? If so, what is it? |
Wondering what his real name is? When you said Norman - I thought of Norm on Cheers - where everyone yelled out "Norm" - Cheers where everyone knows your name & you are loved for just being you! Glad he got to go back to where he is already loved! What a happy ending. Prayers for all those others missing a beloved pet! |
Ijust got a 2 years old and after a week and a half he knows his name.. Just say it over and over gain, kinda like if you are over using it. He will get it. |
Well when little lost BOB came into our lives we had no idea what to name him. We tossed out names for a few days and then my husband came up with the name Bob..and his face lit up and his ears perked and well...he just seemed to like it....So thats what we decided to name him...He had many choices and thats the one he liked best...;) |
