Still cant control barking! Izzy barks uncontrollably at anything outside of the house...birds, squirrels, people etc. While Im glad he is alerting me, sometimes it gets to be annoying because he is really loud!!! Usually when he does it, I will look out of the window first then tell him "NO", or "Thats Enough"....it sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. He is so agitated that the he doesnt even listen...Or I will pull him away from the window and hold him until he is calm. The other scenario is when we go on walks. He saw a dog across the street the other day and just went crazy until I took him over to sniff her. As we were walking over there he was barking and whining so loud he almost scared the other dog. What do I do?:( |
after you tell him no are you following up and telling him he is good when gets quiet for you ? Just like any dog it doesn't take them long to learn that no means stop doing something immediately, but it takes time for you to teach him what is acceptable to do after that NO come out of your mouth. For Ryoko I say NO BARK! and i wait a few second for silence and then say GOOD NO BARK ! so now he knows that no bark means be quiet... Yes he still barks, which all dogs do to communicate, but he knows when i say no bark , not to bark. The test comes when my new dog, Kaze starts barking , then ryoko wants to bark as well, but when i say no bark, even if Kaze is still barking because i have not taught him that yet, Ryoko will stop.. if he is really agitated he will wimper and whine, but he wont bark when i give him that command. |
Have you tried using a spray bottle? Maybe that would work better. My two stop barking (or stop doing whatever they are doing that is bad) as soon as they see the spray bottle 90% of the time now. |
Oh yes, my boys go into a frenzy when anything or anybody goes by my front or back door! Ive started to use a spray bottle and spray them with water when they get like that bc you are right, they cant even hear you say STOP at that point, so you gotta get their attention in another way! The spray bottle is REALLY working well with them! They will bark here & there but those crazy frenzied barking fits are becoming a thing of the past!! Now they look over their shoulder when they bark to see if Im behind them with the squirt bottle! haha Good Luck with your baby!! |
Good suggestions. I will try the spray bottle. When I tell him NO I don't say "good boy" so I will try that too.:) |
My dog trainer suggested putting Bitter Apple in the spray bottle instead of water. When Ana barks, I spray a little on her mouth and tell her "no bark". It seems to work better than water because she hates the taste and immediately stops barking. Good Luck! |
We use the spray bottle. It works most of the time and often we just have to "show" it. I've heard of putting citronella or lemon juice in the water if the water isn't doing, but you have to be careful not to get it in their eyes. I think the Bitter Apple would do the trick too. We say NO BARK when he's barking and "good quiet" when he's quiet. I'm afraid of the "good no bark" suggested would sound too similar and be confusing (or maybe it would only confuse ME!). I'm s-l-o-w-l-y getting to the point where I can say "quiet" when he's barking and he knows what I'm asking for. I also use a quiet hand signal (finger to the lips) at the same time. They're nothing more cutting than a Yorkie's bark. AARRGGHHH. |
Since my post, Ive been using a bottle with pennies in it that's been working so far too. I might have to use the spray bottle when we go on walks...I need the bitter apple for the blinds he destroyed too. Thanks for that suggestion. Im going to get some tomorrow!! |
Good luck with that! I hope it works for you! |
