Going back to work, any advice? Hi Everyone, We have had Aira for just over three weeks now, she is 15 weeks. I have been on paid study leave since we got her so have been home most days. I go back to work tomorrow and am feeling a bit anxious. Can you suggest any ways to help with her being alone during the day? We have an ex-pen for her, we free feed her, she has a lot of toys and she is pretty good about going on her pee pads so that isn't a concern. I just would like to find ways to keep her occupied and to keep her from being lonely. Anyone had experience going back to work after being home with a puppy? Thanks! |
I found early on that Gracie sleeps all day when I am not home. I keep her in her ex-pen with her crate and other necessities. Just have food, water, toys and pea pads, and maybe a Kong or never-ending treat ball for her. The first few days I left Gracie alone, I left talk radio going. I think it was more for me than it was for her! Baby will do just fine. |
Kong? There was a pet trainer that works at Petsmart that told me once to put peanut butter in a kong, and put it in the crate with a dog that would need to be kept occupied overnight, so he wouldn't bark all night. Maybe that will occupy your babies mind while your gone? Oh I forgot to tell you to put the kong in the freezer first, sorry |
A few suggestions: leave on a radio, don't make a big deal out of leaving or returning, and make sure you leave SAFE toys. I always throw a few treats around to distract my two for a few minutes when I am leaving. Doesn't always work though. :D Also, could you possibly come back during your lunch break for the first few days? Maybe that would help her with making the days not seem so long. |
I'm going back to school, after having all summer off to spend with my Wobie. Luckily, I only have three hours of class in the morning, then I come home to him! :D I'll be bringing him to class a lot too, as my college is pretty dog-friendly. I'm still scared and sad to leave him after all this time we've spent together. :( |

I am glad she did ok today. I do not have to leave Winstin much. He can go everywhere with me. When I do leave him, I leave the tv on while I am gone. He seems to like to sit in his bed and watch it. Although he usually falls asleep. |
Make sure any toys you leave are safe, that they don't have anything she can chew off or get hurt on. If she likes a Kong, you can put peanut butter or other treats in that to keep her busy. Also, maybe a bully stick. I would try leaving something with your scent on it to help with possible separation anxiety. |
When Kodak was little, I gated him in, filled the space with pee pads and put his food and water off to the side. I left a radio on so he could hear people talking and music so he could get use to noises and not be startled. I left his favorite stuffed toy to sleep with, a blankie in his crate and some squeak toys and balls. I also left my daughters sock in his bed so he could smell us. LOL. He'll be fine if you make it comfortable for him. |
No real suggestions...I have worked full time since getting Winston...I really think all he does is gets in his bed and sleeps while we're gone...but when we get home...look out, he wants our full attention...and he gets it. |
