Questions about an AKC breeder? If I bought a puppy without getting the papers that day, and the breeder is going to mail them to me, is there a way to check and see if she actually has papers on him.. can i find out if there are any litters of hers registered through AKC? |
Yes you can check with the AKC to see if she registered the litter. |
The breeder should have the papers signed and give to you to mail in with a small fee. If I was told they would "mail" me the papers, then I'd pay only half for the dog till the papers came in. |
Yes, you can check with AKC. i know over the years my husband has sold his beagles there have been quite a few times the papers have been delayed. but AKC is better now than they used to be about getting them right out. |

you can also call your breeder and get the mom and dads AKC #'s that would help as well with your search |
you need the sire and dams AKC numbers and the date of when the litter was born |

If a breeder does not for any reason have the AKC papers to give along with the buyer, then there should be a reciept or contract stating how much was paid for the puppy AND there should be a statement on that paperwork for the buyer to take home with the puppy stating that AKC ( or Canadian Kennel Club in Canada) registration papers will be provided. On my contract when selling a puppy, I also list the registration numbers and registered names of sire and dam and litter registration number of the puppy. Here in Canada we are required to tattoo or microchip any dog or puppy before it leaves our premises and the tattoo number is also listed on the contract so the buyer knows exactly which puppy they are getting. Anybody buying a puppy sold as registered wtih AKC or Canadian Kennel Club registered papers should expect to get a receipt or contract with this information on it before you fork over your money. Without this info, you have no recourse and AKC and Canadian Kennel Club cannot help you, it becomes a he said/she said with nothing in writing to verify even where you got the dog. That 's why this is one more reason buying through the Internet unless you know the breeder very well is a bad idea, as you don't have the one on one contact with the breeder to be sure everything is in place. |

My assumption is that all breeders provide a contract/guarantee...Silly me.....but, then again, a contract is only as good as the 2 people signing it. In addition, I always provide a minimal of a 7 generation pedigree, with Registration #s of each dog within the pedigree. Mary
|

From the phone calls I get AFTER someone purchased a puppy somewhere, not all breeders provide what should be provided and without something in writing the buyer has no recourse. Hopefully, any prospective puppy buyers on this forum will know what to ask for and expect before they purchase by reading our posts. |

Mar
I have been a member of the breed club in Wa state for several years now, only joined the Canadian one recently. HOwever, even before I joined these clubs, I felt I knew what should be provided to a buyer before I read any Code of Ethics of any Club. When I read them, I found mine met or surpassed breed club Code of ethics. Ethics come from the heart and soul, not only from the mandate of a Club. When I initially started out or tried to rather, I was in the clutches of byb's. Their ethics drove me away from them as their first words were that they make money off their dogs and this is a business for them and it can be for me too. I couldn't see making money off of little 5 lbs dogs or any dogs for that matter as if they were livestock. That repugnancy I felt came from my heart and soul, not from anything I was taught. I got away from them and found the right people. |
Yes, you can contact AKC. You will need to atleast know the sire and dams names. Your breeder should provide you with their numbers since there must have been some complication in getting the litter registered. The papers should have been given to you the day you picked the pup up. In Pennsylvania, it is against the law to withold AKC papers until proof of spaying or neutering. Things do happen sometimes that the papers don't come in on time....one little mistake. HOWEVER, I was PROMISED papers once.....NEVER did get them and NEVER could. Why was it the papers weren't available? If I missed it, I appologize. I'd really like to know. I never charge a fee for the papers. |

Well I called AKC and they have no record of her registering any litters this year..And I have been trying to get the papers but she has not responded to my calls or emails..and last but not least, my husband is a police officer so I know that showing up at someones doorstep demanding something is not a smart thing to do and can lead to an arrest for anything that she wanted to make up. In tennessee, if she says that she told me to leave and I didn't when in fact I really did, then she could take out a warrant on me for trespassing just by her telling that lie.. You have to be real careful here in the south.. |
