Paper Confusion? Hello again, We have our now 10 week old male in an X-pen when he can't be supervised. At night, his crate is in there, open, and he sleeps in it. He has newspapers that he will go on during the night. He whines around 7am, just for company I guess. This morning, I took him out, and he went pee, so I gave him some "free time" in the living room with me. He went right over to the paper in the corner and started to poo. I grabbed him quickly and said "no", and took him out. He didn't finish outside, he came back in and pooped on the kitchen floor. Am I confusing him with the paper? I don't want to discourage him from using it if he needs to when we are not home or at night. We live on an acre of flat property, and he has the run of 1/2 of that, fenced in, so he could go out, but I can't leave him out if I have to go somewhere all day. Should we focus on training him to go out? He whimpered at me yesterday and I didn't catch on, then he pooped on the floor, what that a hint? HELP, we're confused... First Welcome to YT! I have three young yorkies, 6months, 4months and 11 weeks. Potty training is going rough here. I use potty pads in the house while I'm gone and they are in their safe zone. A hall blocked out at both ends with baby gates. The two older stay home while I work. and BOTH use the pads 100% while in their spot. BUT....... when I get home I take them outside and they usually go while were out, but if they have the run of the house during the evening, they will use the pads only about 50-75% of the time. I don't know if they "forget" where they are, or if they are mad and they are punishing me for being "gone". I just keep trying to "catch" them going in the wrong spots so, I can take them to the pad or outside. Either is ok with me. but NOT the floors,and throw rugs. Good luck with yours and keep trying. Praise when he's good and scold when bad, They DO WANT TO PLEASE YOU!!!! |
If you can't be with him all the time I think it would be great to paper train him. I wouldn't discourage him from going on it, because he might become afraid to go on it. You can train them for inside and out. It takes a lot of patience. |
I agree with Yorkiekids and would concentrate on paper training first, then outside. Sophie was paper trained, and I was able to use that method for her entire life while I was at work, etc. However, when she learned outside, when I was home she would let me know, so I incorporated both routines in her schedule. Definitely, don't scold for going to the paper and their will be mistakes on the floor until all of the training comes together. Sometimes the Sunday paper took a hit or two Good luck -Deborah PS 10 weeks is extremely young, and there are a lot of breeders who won't even let the pups leave their mothers until a few weeks older. There are some excellent website on puppy training that may help you. |
I trained mine for the pads and outside. It was quite easy. They seem to naturally go outside when you have them out to potty and play or walk, and if you are not home to take them out, then keep them in the expen attached to the front of a wire crate, and put pads down. They will go on the pads as well. |
I tied a little wind chime to my back door and my Ollie who is now 5 months old will ring it to let me know he has to go. He rarely has accidents inside and it is a fun game. When we are not home he is in his crate and will hold it till we return. He has never been left in his crate longer than 6 hours, though.... |
Zoey is pee pad trained. She will play outside, even on the beach for a 1/2 hour and them come inside and go on the pad. She has never gone on grass. She is 6 mo old. We are 100% trained. I dont know what would happen if we tried to incorporate outside tho'. Im just sticking with pee pads and count my blessings because I know a lot of people say their Yorkie took over a year to train. I dont mind the pads. |
Thanks for the response I was feeling guilty for stopping him on the paper. He looked so confused. We tossed around the idea of him being paper trained or litter box trained, but I would hate the odor in the house. Also, with males, when they get older, wouldn't paper training become a problem? I need a schedule for him. Right now, he is in his xpen, we will take him out, if he "goes", we let him run around for 10 to 20 min, then back in the pen. We went for a long walk outside today, and he pooped 2x's and pee-pee'd once. He still messed in the living room once tonight though. How often do they need to urinate? How often do they need food/water? Is a 4hr schedule enough? Poor Spikey, living with us confused humans....:aimeeyork |
