So many questions. :)
 

We got a 8 week female yorkie yesterday morning. I brought her for a check up this morning and she is a little over 1 pound and in good health. She didn't cry very much last night. I put her in a crate and right up against my side of the bed last night and slept with my fingers in the side of her cage, she laid against my fingers and slept pretty good. She waited to potty this morning on a pee pad after I took her out of the crate and has done really good with going on the pee pads.

So, my questions....

We bought a large pen and covered the bottom with pads to train her and over time take out the pads until there is only one left - is this a good idea or not?

We have been taking turns letting her sleep on us - will that spoil her too bad?

This is a biggie - We are scared to leave her alone. We have so far taken turns shopping or bringing her with us because we are scared to leave her alone. What do you all do when you go get groceries or go places doggies aren't allowed?

I guess I really just want some advice on being a new puppy owner, I feel so nervous and stressed because she is so small. I would love any suggestions you could share with me.

Congrats! I am no expert so I will leave most of your questions for the others. I do not think it is a good idea to take the puppy out of the crate every time she cries, cause that will teach her to do that anytime she wants out. It is training you instead of the other way around LOL.

First off Congrats on your new puppy! Sounds like you have a good first day. The idea with the pee pads and the ex-pen is a good one. She is very young and very small so i can understand your being scared to leave her alone. As long as she has food and water in her crate when you leave she should be ok. If you are going to be gone for more then an hour or so i'd give her nutrical before you go just because she is so small. good luck with your new baby

Do NOT take her out when she is crying, this will only encourage her to do it more. Do not acknowledge her at all when she is crying. Completely ignore her. Then when she is quite, you can take her out.

I remember those days with Ellie.:( They grow up so fast. I would NOT let her out of the pen just because she is crying because she will begin to think that everytime she cries she gets out which is not good when you want to crate them and have them be quiet when they are older. It is a good idea not to leave her alone right now or atleast not for long periods. She is still very young and is at risk for hypoglycemia. She should be supervised a good share of the time. I think it is fine that she sleeps on you. Yorkies need to be spoiled.:) Enjoy your doggie.

Welcome and Congradulations it sounds like your doing good i agree use nutra cal if your going to be going for over an hr she is tiny and let her cry some ... and try not to make a big deal of your sweet baby when you take her out of the crate .. it just reinforces the crying gets me held and loved theroy watch out they train us quick ... have fun :p

I adopted my babies when they were past the newborn stage & it's been so many years since I've had a new puppy, I'll leave the new questions to others.

Except to echo don't let her train you. Be sure to praise her when you take her out and she goes on the pad! What a good girl she is!

Welcome and it sounds like you have a really well behaved crate trainer. I would definetly not pick her up when she crys, or you'll have a mess on your hands. I know first hand, because I did this with Penny, and now she barks everytime she wants something. I'm getting better at ignoring her barks, but it's hard when their so darn cute.
