1st time yorkie owner
 

I should be getting my first yorkie in about 3 weeks. Looking for some advise on what are some must haves for this pup. Toys, treats, cleaning products, ect., any help would be great! My past dogs have been afghan hounds, so a yorkie is a big change. Thanks for your help.

Congratulations on your new baby. I too am a first time Yorkie owner. I have never had a toy breed until two months ago. You can spend a fortune on these babies,--believe me, I did too. Petsmart opens the door when they see me come!!! :D Just about everything we have purchased, she plays with. One hint of advice, NO NO HUMAN FOOD..Big Mistake. Purchase a high quality food like Royal Canin33 Mini Puppy, Bil Jac, Innova, etc. just to name a few, and nothing else. Maggie invented the work PICKY, until I quit giving into her. It was tough love on Mama, but now she eats her dry food. I was afraid she would starve, but the members here--kept encouraging me--and it worked. The best thing we purchased for Maggie was a car seat. She loves it, can see out the window, and has never fought to get out of it. If you plan on taking your baby for rides, then you might look into it. Oh don't forget the Nurtical or Nutristat. Have to keep their blood sugar up for a few months. Your breeder should give you the in's and out's of raising a Yorkie. If not, we will be here for you. I don't know what I would have done without the YT members. The how to's go on and on. Just list your question and you will get a load of answers.

Congratulations on your new baby! Besides Nutrical the next most important thing I can think of is Natures Miracle.

Here are the must-haves in my house:

a crate for sleeping
a fleece blanket for sleeping on
a nylabone
some plush squeeky toys
a rubber ball for fetch
pee-pads & pee-pad spray (if you are going to indoor train)
baby gates for blocking off rooms you don't want them in
a harness and leash (adjustable)
food/bowls/treats
car seat or car harness of some kind
grooming supplies (brush, comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner)

I think that's everything I started out with. Of course now she has clothing and a bed and stuff like that. But she doesn't really "need" that...she is just spoiled ;) Good luck and enjoy your new baby!

First Time Yorkie Owner with Questions
 

I too have enjoyed reading about other Yorkies and I have many of the same questions that I have seen posted onsite. First, our puppy belongs to my 11 year old daughter. She wanted a Yorkie so bad! We hunted and searched for one at a reasonable price - we had/have no breeding plans and just wanted one for a pet. No breeders live near us, and I found one through the newspaper. The dog was a couple of hours from us. I paid the deposit and then realized that it was not registered AKC - but UKC. The breeder explained that this was a good registry and it was a registered Yorkie. Since it is just a family pet, I thought it would be fine. She emailed me photos of the mom and the dad. The dad looks like a Yorke - the Mom I had a few concerns about - but she assured me that they are Yorkies - not a mix. Our puppy, whom we love dearly, looks like a baby yorkie. She weighs 3 pounds and is 10 weeks old. Her father was about 9 pounds and her mother was 6 pounds. However, I have no idea how to tell if she truly is a Yorkie and I suppose it doesn't make a lot of difference. However, I did not want a large dog in the house and my real fear is IF she has something else in her - I have no way of knowing what could happen in the future. For instance, are there any traits you should look for to know whether a dog is a Yorkie or not? Any comments????

I still don't have my Yorkie but it took me about 3 weeks to get all the stuff together. Now my nursery is ready and I need my baby!!!

My breeder advised (gently insisted) that I get an exercise pen. it's one of those metal cage like things that lay flat for storage or carrying if you go visit someone. you can put the bed, food, wee pads and toys in there and leave knowing that your little one is safe. a gated room serves the same purpose but a small area that is their own might work better for some.

I also got a playpen, which sounds sort of nuts...but I wanted options.

and toys, and 3 collars and 2 leashes, a frontpack, a purse, a crate, a bed...yikes. I have lost my mind.

Do a lot of reading on this site...Yorkies range 2-18 lbs??? You might want one of the larger ones for children.

I don't know how you can tell if she is a pure Yorkie. I would be interested in the breeders experience and the health history of her dogs.

My friend has a playpen for her Yorkie and he LOVES it.
