Eating Same Food All The Time???? Hello, I was just curious if your Yorkies continue to stay on the same dog food or do they get bored with it and wont' eat it? I am wondering this because Kiki first started off on Royal Canine Puppy food which she ate for a couple of months. After a while, she was not interetsed in this. The vet gave us Science Diet which she loved for only a month. Then I switched to Royal Canine Yorkie food ... she ate this for two months and now won't even look at it. It seems Kiki gets into these moods where she will devour something for awhile and then walk away from it. I went out today and got samples of Canidae, Wellness, Blue and Innova hoping that one of them will be appealing to her? The woman at the store felt so bad that she gave me every sample she had. I honestly thought most dogs continue on the same dog food for their entire life. This is getting to be very frustrating. I can hear Kiki's tummy grumbling but she refuses to eat her usual food. I just handfed her some of the Blue kibble and she seemed to like it. But I know I am suppose to gradually transition her from the old food to the new. I am sure she will pick out just the new food. I just don't get it ... she has no problem eating tissues, sticks and leaves. Anna http://www.dogster.com/dogs/511397 |
I find that my dog definately gets bored with the same thing, which is one of the reasons I started homecooking for her. Now she gets a variety of foods and I haven't noticed her having any tummy or bowel problems at all. I also notice that she eats much, much better if I feed her contained in her crate. She doesn't eat well if there are distractions. If I put the food in the crate with her she gobbles it down. She doesn't spend much time in the crate anymore - only when I am going out for an hour or two (how do you spell s-p-o-i-l-e-d?) - but she definately eats better in the crate. |
This is what Jeanie does!!! Since I have had her, she looks like she LOVES something, then after a while she just turns her nose up at it and walks away............ Right now it seems to be working, with Royal Canin, a tiny bit of cheddar cheese, and this roll over food (comes in a tube, is all natural, and I just put little pieces of it amongst the dry kibble). Grant it, she eats mostly the roll and cheddar, and not the kibble much.......it's so frustrating. I am thinking of changing her once again - and trying Canidae thist ime. I wanted to have that all along, I think from what I have read it's pretty good. The Orijen she devoured completely the first few times I gave it to her, then she could care less later. Darn finicky yorkies hey! |

My neighbor's Shnauzer has been eating the same dry food for 10 years. I thought all dogs were like this. Oh well........... |
If mine seem to be bored I just add a little something to it, and they'll eat it all up. |
Gracie and Hallee has been eating the same thing for awhile now. We try to mix it up a bit by adding a tad of cottage cheese, green bean baby food, carrot baby food and boiled chicken to it. We feed them both hard and soft food. They have not stopped eating it yet. |
This is really common with yorkies, I think. They're just so so picky and so spoiled. I know some people rotate two or three quality foods, so they never get bored. Maybe you could feed something else for a while, then go back to the RC and see if she eats it. |

I think they do, its one of the reasons I feed raw, they get different foods every day of the week and never turn any down unless they are sick. |
I went through the same thing with max. He would love his food the first time i gave it to him...eat it all up. next feeding he wouldnt touch it. what did i do? go and get him something else and once again he would gobble it up then second feeding nothing, smelled it and walked away. I came to the conclusion that I am the one creating a picky eater. He obviously liked the food if he ate it all the first time but me catering to him by changing the food made him the picky eater. he didnt eat cuz he was waiting for mommy to put out the new stuff lol. I gave up! im sticking to one food that i have seen him eat and thats all. somedays he eats 2-3 bowls and some days he eats 5-6 kibbles. i use to worry so much but if hes hungry he WILL eat. as long as i know the food is out for him i dont worry about it. theres been a few times he wouldnt touch his food for a whole day...i take itas him not being hungry. |
When mine were young I made the mistake of changing their food when they would get bored of it, then we got down to them not wanting the same food more than twice. I created picky dogs and it was very frustrating. So I found a food that was healthy for them that I wanted them to eat and that's what they get everyday. there was a bit of a stand off about it for at first and then they got hungry and realized this was all their was to offer and they started eating again. I haven't had a problem since and I won't be changing their food again. |

I agree...by changing their food you are creating a picky eater. Plus what they don't know, they can't miss. Feed the same food, and you will also find less tummy issues. Constantly changing what they eat upsets their systems, that is why breeders and vets suggest slowly changing to the food you want to feed...then stick with it, don't confuse them by trying different foods over and over again. Just be consistent...that is the key to a happy well fed pup. Of course this is only my opinion, and it works for me...In addition...NO people food at all is the rule in my house. There is no begging going on, Winston doesn't even care that we are eating because he doesn't know what he is missing. |
