One smelly ear! One of my boys has a smelly ear all the time! I clean it out and find it pretty dirty and then a week later its smelly again really bad and I clean it out and its really dirty... this just keeps going on. The other ear is fine. He does not seem to be in pain or have an infection. I mean I get wax out of it everytime I clean it.... but its once a week I have to clean it cuz it starts to smell bad! :confused: :confused: Does he have like overactive wax glands in that ear or something??? HAHAHA Of both my boys Id expect ear problems with the other one cuz his ears are not upright really, but this guy has ears that stand STRAIGHT UP so they get plenty of airing out.... Any clues? |
Yes, he has an ear infection. The smell and brown wax is a give away, at this point you need meds for the ears from the vets. Best Wishes, |
He should be seen by the vet...it could be a yeast infection.....or a bacterial infection, you won't be able to see anything when you look in his ears.... if there's hair growing IN the ear it could be acting like a wick holding moisture in his ears...I hope you find the cause soon...:) |

Yes, it sounds like a yeast infection. Ellie had ear problems like that for the longest time (over a year). All a lot of vets want to do is give you ear mite med. Please make them look at it under the microscope. If what you are getting out is black or brownish, it is probably a yeast infection. |
I had the same problem.... I agree I just took Brody to the vet the other day for a check up and asked the same question. He looked in the ear cleaned the brown wax and looked again and said it was an ear infection. He gave him meds (ear drops that I have to put in his ears 2x daily for 7 days. He too didn't seem to complain or be in pain at all. I posted a question on the sick or injured thread and was told to start putting earplugs or cotton in his ears during bath time (i'm a newbie so i never thought to do this). The meds make his head look like a grease ball :eek: , but at least his ears are getting better...:) |

oh man, I feel soooooo bad now!! I honestly had NO idea it could be an infection! Its now approaching a long holiday weekend and there will be no way to take him until next week :( at least hes not in pain... but I will get him meds next week :) My poor little baby! hes sooo good and never complains! |
Glad you brought this up celstu1, because I just got my little girl yesterday and I bathed her twice because she was stinking....she smells lovely every where except for around the ears.....I am bringing her in on Sat, so I will have them look at it...... Ya'll are all very helpful. |
Good luck! I hope your little one will have one less smelly ear soon! By the way, do you pluck the inner ear hair. It keeps the ear much cleaner. It really doesn't hurt them. We have the groomer do it since we are squimish, but my Chibi's ear's are much easier to clean. Just a thought... |
When I brought Pao home a year ago, he had smelly ears problem which upon a check-up with the vet, he recommended OtiCalmn to be used once a day for the first 7 days because he had infection and then once a week after that. OtiCalm helped right away. Its been a year now and I am still dripping OtiCalm into his ears which he totally hates once a week but it works. |

Edit: Just a quick note. When I bath him, I never rinse his head to avoid water going in. I use a washcloth with a little shampoo for his face area and wipe it clean many times with a damp washcloth. Ear infections can cause big problems in their little head so its best to avoid getting any water into their ears at all. |
How do you all clean the ears? , No one mentioned on a routine ear cleaning, regardless of an infection. I usually put cotton balls before Duchess bath, but they fall off in the tub, I am not familiar on how to clean her ears. Thanks in advance. |
I forgot to say there are also OtiRinse and OtiFoam and maybe a few others which I do not know of. I do not know what are the differences between those and the OtiCalm. |
