Ugh! Wobie has Worms! I just found three little worm segments in his poop. I'm pretty sure its tapeworms. He's never had any signs of worms before, and I would know because I pick up all of his poop and give it a close look to keep tabs on his health. I don't even know how this happened, because I thought he was up to date on all that stuff. He was at the vet all day today for his neuter, could he have picked it up there? Or is it too soon for him to be showing symptoms if he just picked it up today?I've also heard that stress can make dormant worm eggs hatch and become apparent, and this has certainly has been a stressful day for him. Is that a possibility? Or is it just a coincidence that these worms appear the night he comes home from a day at the vet? I'll go back to the vet tomorrow...the last place I want to go after barely bringing home my baby this evening. This day has been emotional enough already. :( |
Oh no!:( I hope everything turns out ok. |
They get tapeworms from ingesting a flea. And I don't think that any of the heart worm meds prevent tapeworms. You will have to get a special treatment. Good luck. |
Tapeworms look like little white rice segments. Dogs normally get tapeworms from fleas, but can also get them from eating feces or being exposed to feces with tapeworms in it. He wouldn't have gotten them just today and already have segments in his poop. A tapeworm is actually one long worm that attaches itself in the intestines - it can grow several feet in length if left long enough (in people and larger dogs anyway). The little pieces you see are segments of the tapeworm. The big tapeworm is made up of segments and the segments break off to become their own little tapeworms. They can be easily cleared up with a pill now and one again in three weeks. There isn't really a preventative for tapeworms that I know of - all the other preventatives and intestinal dewormers don't usually take care of tapeworms. You have to get a special pill to kill the tapeworms. |

Thanks everyone for the well-wishes too. I'll be at the vet tomorrow. |
Yikes, I didn't know I was supposed to be looking at Maxwell's poop. I thought all the worm issues were covered in the monthly pill -- you YTers are so clever. Hope the tapeworm issue gets resolved for you. Sounds like you got good advice. |
Uck I hope the little one is O K! Good luck at the vets! |
All you need to do is take the meds(not you the baby), and it will kill the worms. No need to worry. |
tapes Fortunately, tape worms are not as hard on the dogs health as hooks, round and most other worms...my vet said some have them for months before the owner finds them and the dog is not sick or weakened...but good to get rid of them of course... |
Oh, no!!! With mine, I wouldn't have to bring them inbc they give me a pill to give to them. They just have to know the weight. |
Get some Drontel or Droncit pills from your vet. you will need to get an initial dose and give a second dose in two weeks. it will kill the worms. Just a word of warning though, I hope you have a strong stomache. Let me explain, I haven't seen any from Cody but he gets droncit every three weeks as a precaution because the fleas are so horrible here, my cat also gets a dose every three weeks, well she was recently given a double dose because of her weight gain, after about two hours of getting the pills .....she passed them, thank God they were dead but they were passed. It was shocking!!!!! I had seen the segments coming from her and gave her the regular doses and didn't see anything again for a while but with this second dose....OMG......she's cleaned out that's for sure! Sorry so long and gross we have been dealing with flea problems and tapeworms all summer long! |
Hallee had tapework a few weeks ago. Vet said the get it from ingesting a flea, one flea will do it. Vet gave us one little pill. We had to treat both dogs even though we only saw it in Hallee's poo. Be careful because we humans can get it from our pets. Be sure to wash your hands ect. Oh, it is not prevented with heartguard. |
oh no! I would call your vet and see what they say! I don't blame you for not wanting to go back there tomorrow either! Poor Wobie won't want to go back there tomorrow either! |
