i just saw a dog get hit by a car just two minutes ago i was outside because this dog came into my yard and my dog was going crazy.. so his owner was getting him.. he didnt have a leash anyways they were accross the street at my neighbors and i was going to say hi to my mom and my dog was on a leash and whatever.. the dog must have seen my mom and walked over to see her and a car came and hit him.. i felt so bad.. he walked off the road but the car drove off with out even looking back and the two girls were screaming and crying and freaking out and ran after but they didnt stop.. my neighbor went after him on his motorcycle.. hes scary but i cant stop crying.. ive never seen anything like that happen.. my neighbor gave him his phone so the girls could call someone otherwise my mom would have driven him to a vet.. i swear this will never happen on this street again.. it happened to my moms dog when she was like 15 and her best friends older brother was hit by a car and died too.. is there anyway i can make sure no one speeds on this road? can i start a petition? it was literaly 500 feet from a school too.      |
It is horrible to see something like that!! Call the police department EVERY DAY to report speeding on this road. Eventually they will post a car there to check. We live on a main thoroughfare - the speed limit is 25mph like all the other subs - and people fly down our street between 45 and 50mph all the time. We do have a police officer who lives a few houses down and regularly parks his care in his driveway. That helps somewhat but the only thing that slows people down (temporarily) is when there is a car posted near the stop sign (that people also regularly blow through). |
OMG! Is the dog going to be O.K? Maybe try informing your police station and they can patrol the area more, or set something up. Usually people won't speed on roads where cops are known to hide out. Please let us know if you here anything about the poor dog, and if the guy caught the idiot who did this. |
Oh, honey, I'm so sorry you had to see that! Is the dog okay, did he survive? That is so devastating. There were alot of speeders on one of our cross streets - I think there were enough complaints and finally 3 speedbumps were put in. |
My towns horrible when it comes to catching people.. its been happening in my neighbor hood since my mom was 11 she is now 40 (we live next to her old house now).. im going to start a petition.. its all mostly because a gym is down the street and all the 'rich' people go there.. i feel sick now too.. i could prevented it and let him borrow my dogs leash.. the car was going about 50 in a 35 and your actually supposed to slow down there is a sign in my front yard that says SLOW SCHOOL ZONE..im talking to my mom she says because my city is so incompetant she wants to run for office.. |
Oh the poor dog. Did it survive? I would not want to have witnessed anything like that. I hope they get the SOB who sped away. My daughter got stop signs on her street several years ago. It is a very heavy traveled street daily because cars use it to get to the train station in the am for the city and speed down it because they are usually late. She got a recorder and interviewed every child, parent and bus driver on the street for weeks. Then she got her movie camera and waited from 6am until the school buses left and recorded all the cars and speeders. Of course the local police are never to be found. She took all the evidence to a local board meeting accompanied by her neighbors and showed them the movies, and interviews. She got not only one sign but two at the cross road across from her house. Her husband gave her a STOP SIGN party and decorated the house with stop signs and invited everyone to celebrate the night away the day the signs went up. |

who can i write to in the city from this site? ==> http://www.ci.haverhill.ma.us/departments/index.htm |
That is horrible! I can't believe the person didn't even stop. We have a major problem with people speeding around here too. The bad part is, it's an ongoing problem that people are aware of, yet they let their animals and KIDS!!! play in the road, do whatever. It's crazy! It's not a problem near us because we live in a circle, but on the main streets in the neighborhood...forget it! I always creep because I never know who ar what is going to run out in front of the car! Here are some steps we've taken that have at least *helped*: First, call your local police department OFTEN...encourage others to do the same. Eventually, they WILL get tired of you calling and will check up on things. Secondly, contact your city council and/or attend a meeting. They don't want their name to look bad and want to be elected again...they don't want a bunch of angry citizens on their case because they didn't give attention to areas where it was needed. Keep records of your efforts. Third, if you still don't get results, call your local news. See if you can get them to do a story...explain the injuries and deaths that have been caused and that your pleas for help have been ignored. They will jump on the chance...especially with you being near a school. It's one thing for the city leaders to look bad to their own citizens...they certainly don't want to look bad to an even larger area. Lastly, put on oversized sunglasses, take your hairdryer to the street, and act like you are clocking people. Maybe if you present yourself as a lunatic, they will be too worried to speed. ;) Good luck!:) |
Sadly, I don't think enough people care about animals to listen to you. Try a different strategy. Focus on children getting hit by a car. Use the fact that many animals have bit hit and killed and it's only a matter of time before a child gets killed. That will get people's attention and you can get something done about it. |

So sorry you had to see that. It is good you are talking about it. Witnessing a traumatic event can have a bigger impact on you than people realize. Hope you feel better soon. Taking action the way you are will also help you feel better! |

Just think about how you communicate the problem. When you are fighting for animals, people tend to disregard you. Make the safety of children the main focus and they will always listen. Its sad, but sometimes this is what you have to do. |

Oh my gosh....this just makes me sick. I am SO SORRY that you had to see something like this :( This is just awful! I know I for one would be traumatized if I witnessed something like that. Thank goodness the dog is still alive though. That poor baby :( There is a guy that lives down at the end of my street and he just FLYS - I'm talking 60 mph or more going down a street with KIDS on it - I can barely see his truck pass by it goes so fast. Every time I see that I just CRINGE!!!! If I were you I would call the city (and try to get others too as well) and see about them putting speed bumps on your street. This is just so uncalled for!! |

Yea i guess.. i'm going to start calling th police tomorrow. about 2 weeks ago we had a speed thing for a day.. i.m deffinatly going to make sure i raise awareness.. and hopefully with the help of one of my neighbors (she has been down to city hall numerous times trying to get soemthing done about this) it was her son who went after the person who ran over the dog.. he is also the one who has stepped in front of speeding cars and thrown little pebbles at them.. i was just thinking about using my phone or a video camera to start taping people.. the other thing that would reduce speeding is stop signs at every small intersection.. which is pretty close to each other. |

oh it makes me so mad when people bring their dogs out w/o a leash on a busy road! I was watching my friends kid (my ex's neice) and she was like 8 years old at the time and I lived on a SUPER BUSY road! well we were walking to the store and this TINY pug came dashing across the street to 'meet' us! He got hit 1/2 way across and I ran out and picked him up and brought him to my side but it was too late, he was doi (dead on impact) and my neice was DEVASTATED!!! Crying and sooo upset and the owner (some young punk) comes running over from the other side of the street, and he kept saying 'my wife is going to kill me, just KILL ME" I was saying to him "are you an idiot??? This is a BABY!! You dont bring it outside without a leash on THIS road!!!!!" Oh I was sooooooo ANGRY and upset I was shaking!!! I called the police to call animal control and they came and took away the baby! It was a 3 month old Pug!!! Bet you that hubby got couch duty for about oooohhh a few weeks for SURE!!! Its soooooo sad!!! |

I pray the dog is going to be alright & got to the vet! Everybody is in a hurry. But speeding in neighborhoods is ridiculous. Contact the police, the city council and the media. One of my girlfriends successfully got a stop sign put up in her neighborhood with the smallest effort. Read what your city requires. The more neighbors you get behind you the better. Perhaps you could even work to get the speed limit dropped to 25 mph in your neighborhood. Also, call your city councilperson at home & make them aware of it going on - this is their job - you are not bothering them! I live on a busy neighborhood street - it lays between 2 main arteries of my city - actually both these other streets reach out into the suburbs to the east & west. The speed on my street is 30 mph which makes no sense, because the next street over is 25 mph & has plenty of stop signs, while there is only 1 stop sign on my street between the 2 main arteries. I ought to work on getting it lowered because I can't believe how fast people drive and I remember a decade ago - when I raised Bichons and knew nothing about Yorkies, I saw one of the little yorkies that a gal 2 blocks down had, laying dead on the parking in front of her house evidently killed by a car. Does your police department have those mobile units that tell drivers how fast they are going? I see people slow down when they see those units. Get the police department to put one on your street for a week or two & video tape people as was suggested earlier. Call the police & ask to speak with someone in the traffic department - that's who handles speeders. Also, I work in the media - that's a good place to turn to. Media outlets are suffering these days - they are all looking for the local story to get people reading or tuned in. Speeders are definitely that type of story because people are passionate about others not speeding in their neighborhoods. One of our local TV stations did this entire feature this spring called SOS - Stop Our Speeders - they actually asked viewers to email them with speeding problems, they mapped all the neighborhood problems in the city & gave some viewers speed guns to go out & clock the speeders with. Then they got the police involved. If you want to see/read some of the reports here are two links: http://www.kcci.com/news/13294227/detail.html http://www.kcci.com/news/13302192/detail.html Also here is video link to part of the report that includes suggestions from a police officer on what to do about speeders: http://www.kcci.com/video/13303213/index.html Good luck hon! |

My little chihuahua Years ago, my pet doggie, was in the yard, she managed to get out through the gate, and ran into the street! Poor little thing didnt even know what hit her! This huge car ran over her and of course when the neighbors yelled out my name I came running out and saw my pet in the road dead. I felt dead to the world, I should have had her on a leash, she was so tiny. But the guy that hit her didnt even stop, kept on going like he ran over a can or something! :thumbdown |
Our city did a survey on streets that get a lot of complaints in regards to speeders. Those streets now have speed bumps every few yards and nobody wants to use them now because you have to drive too slow. It's wonderful! And when new complaints come in, they do those roads also. It's an on-going thing. Maybe they'll get rid of all the speeders that want to cut through out little city to get somewhere quick. Guess they'll have to stick to the larger thoroughfares. :( :D I'll have to ask my daughter-in-law how that got the city's attention to get it done. She's a police officer for our city so maybe there's an inside scoop. |
