Skittish?
 
Do people describe your dog as skittish? I take Chewy to work with me, and so Chewy has a lot of interaction with people. He is very calm, always comes around the desk and checks everyone out. However, when people (especially kids) move to quickly or go to grab him, he'll back up a little bit. That's usually when people say, "Oh, he's skittish." The other day, I heard a lady tell her son, "Let's go, that dog is just skittish." I looked to see what Chewy was doing, and he was licking the little boys fingers, and his little tail was wagging. :confused: Anyway, it doesn't really bother me, I just wondered if other people describe your dog the same way? Maybe people just overuse that word with small dogs?

yuppers... here too. I think it is a "yorkie" thing.. Layla always backs away when you try and pick her up... i can't figure it out... people think she is shy... she is quite the opposite! and she is very "skittish" when something makes a loud noise... but i think people think she is skittish because she won't let them pick her up....

cody isnt soo much skittish as spoiled LOL he loves to be with me (momma) when new people come around he wont go up to them right away. then after a bit he will sniff them it takes a while for him to get use to them. and then once he gets use to you. watch out! he will play and kiss ya like crazy.
he wont let anyone hold him but me. he will go to NANA (my mom) for a few minutes and then its back to momma .

Jewels is very and I dont know why. I have tried hard to socialize her because shes been that way since she was a pup. But I didnt have any success. She backs up when people go to pet her. Also when I have kids other than My Daughter in the house she wants me to hold her

I wouldn't call that skittish, I'd call it smart. If I had something so much bigger than me, had no idea what it was, and it was coming quickly at me, I'd be backing up too!! :D

I agree, I think there's a little bit of a stereotype there. People don't understand how it feels to be such a teeny tiny creature, and to be approached by enormous creatures that are so much bigger.

I agree, I understand why he backs up and I don't think he is being skittish in this instance, but I hear it a lot. It's like people don't understand the behavior of small dogs, so they just say they're skittish. If you approach him slowly, he'll let you pick him up. He just doesn't like kids yelling or running after him. In the instance with the little boy, he was totally fine, not scared at all. I don't know why the mom said that.:confused:
