Yorkies, varying sizes? I have seen discussions about the different colors of Yorkies and such. However, I have been unable to find anything about the varying sizes of Yorkies (doesn't mean it's not here). Most of the YT members seem to have tiny or small dogs. Charlie is much larger, almost the size of a cat. I know there are teacup Yorkies, right? How big can I expect Charlie to get? Could y'all help me with this? I am naive to all things Yorkie, but everyone has been so helpful and welcoming. Thanks for helping this YT newbie! (I posted this in another thread, but I guess it got lost.) |
There are so many sizes of yorkies, and we have all of them here. The yorkie standard says that they should weigh under 7 pounds. 4-7 pounds is average, I think, but we also have several babies here that weigh 2 pounds and a lot that weigh over standard, up to 15-20 pounds. We love all sizes equally here! :D |
I forgot to answer your question about how big your little Charlie will be. How old is he? Do you know how much he weighs now? |

Yorkies come in all different sizes, shapes and coat types. I have 3 yorkies, 2 are within the standard and one is 12 pounds, its just more to love :) |
No, there is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie. That is just a term that gets thrown around...mostly by unethical breeders to try to bring in big $$$. Like someone mentioned, the standard for a Yorkie is up to 7 pounds. That does not mean that you won't find them bigger though. |
So I did some investigating, and I found out that Charlie is 8 months old. Usually they slow down growing soon after that, so I don't think he'll get too much bigger. Some continue growing up to two years though, so you never know. |
The standard is written for that ideal dog, something that all breeders should be striving for. Not to exceed 7 pounds. However, just because a yorkie is larger or smaller doesn't make it any less a yorkie. You just wouldn't take an undersized or oversized yorkie into the show ring. Everytime I read one of these posts I wonder why one is so obsessed with the size of the yorkie and just not happy that their yorkie looks like a yorkie and is happy and healthy. Yes, they come in all sizes, shapes and colors.....however, they are a Toy Breed....nothing else not a Teacup, Miniture, Standard Size.....Just a Toy dog. |
There are bigger yorkies, Aubrey is 14 lbs!!!!! They are called "teapots" or "crocpots" depending on there size..lol. ;) |

My yorkie is about 11lbs, but that doesn't make him any less of a yorkie...There are smaller yorkies and bigger yorkies, but like everyone mentioned, the standard calls for 7 lbs and under. |
I think I was misunderstood. I am simply curious about the Yorkie breed in general. It doesn't matter to me how big or small Charlie is. Just like I am a size 14, doesn't make me any less loveable because I'm not a size 4...just means there's more to love! |
