Should I rescue?
 

I am considering rescuing a yorkie. I don't have a yorkie yet because I want to show, but I'm going to the YTCA yorkie specialty next week to meet a mentor, and from there, hopefully learn to show and eventually get a puppy. Until then, I'd really love to get one just for a pet. I've never rescued before, so I have many questions, of course. :D I really do like the idea of getting one from a rescue to give it a loving home, but then I start questioning it. :rolleyes: Would you suggest I rescue one??

It takes a very special person to home a rescue, and I truly hope that you are that person. There is a special place in Heaven for those that rescue. Not sure what your family make up is, but in case your rescue is a serious case with serious issues, make sure that you're ENTIRE family is on board and is completely educated. Rescues "with problems" can place extra stress on families, and so many times rescues are relinquished again because the families aren't really prepared for problems that might exist.

yes, I understand many have been abused and have many special needs.
I love this little girl. She was surrendered to the rescue because her elderly owner couldn't take care of her anymore. She looks so sweet.

All six of my current pets came from rescue situations, including my yorkie. She was part of a group of dogs that were living in unhealthy conditions with an elderly, senile lady. Penny wasn't a tiny pup when I got her, and housebreaking has been very difficult. You must also recognize and prepare for even more unexpected medical expenses when you're dealing with a rescue dog, since you really have no way of knowing if the breeder was careful. I am pretty certain that given the conditions she came out of, my dog is probably inbred and gosh knows what else. So far I've been lucky, but one of her brothers had a liver shunt that required surgical correction, and another "cousin" from the same rescue needed to have surgery on his hips at only 1 year of age. Of course, medical problems can pop up even in carefully bred dogs, as can behavior problems, housebreaking issues, and everything else. You have to be ready for that kind of thing no matter where you get a pet from; there's just a lot more room for uncertainty with a rescue.

I've always felt like the rewards outweigh the potential problems though; there's no better feeling in the world than the first time a previously neglected animal approaches you on his own to kiss your hand, or the first time a dog who has spent her whole life locked up inside is put down on the grass in your yard and runs and runs and runs until she flops over exhausted. It's a very precious gift to be able to share love, joy, freedom and security with another creature who has been denied one or all of those things in the past.

I have a rescue that lived in a cage over a year his name is nikkie,he is so verbal and needs lots of attention, if you dont pay attention he wiil put his paw on your shoulder and let you know to pay attention,he is so lovable and sweet,plays tug of war with my abbey,he has become my fiancees baby he has never had a house dog and has grown so attached to him,he doe not mind being woke up early by him to go out,having him is such a blessing, because i believe we need to give the love that they give us.

Just a bit amazed since this is a yorkie forum .... seems like a good idea to adopt this rescue ... but is she in your state???

It is better when people know about yorkie forum BEFORE getting yorkie. IMO, at least they know more about yorkies...;)

Abby is beautiful and I think it is great that you are considering bringing her into your home. I think if you have the time, patience and devotion to give her it would be a great thing for the both of you. Good luck and best wishes! Let us know what you decide....

Yes, no yorkie. :rolleyes: I came here last november when I found an interest in yorkies. I wanted to learn more about them and see if a yorkie was right for me. I have sense found a special love for yorkies, and I want to show. I'm thinking about rescuing to give a yorkie a loving home, but also to have a companion for the years before I get a pup to show.

I think it's wonderful that you have taken the time to learn more about Yorkies before getting one and I also think adopting a rescue would be fantastic! It does take some time to get a show puppy from a reputable breeder/exhibitor. Besides, like people have mentioned before, they're like potato chips, you can't have just one. I don't have a Yorkie either. This is my first post here. I am a grandma to a delightful little 11lb yorkie named Maggie. I am Mom to a rescued Toy Fox Terrier named Sophie. I usually try to get Maggie to my house about once every six weeks because she and my Sophie get along so good. They play so well together. My Sophie weighs about 9lbs so I do have to watch the wrestliing matches. Sophie only has 3 legs and tires easily - that's when I step in and play with Maggie.

I love Yorkies and maybe one day I'll have my very own (I am thinking of kidnapping my daughter's Maggie and then I won't offer a ransom :D )

Before you make any decisions, I think you should wait until AFTER you meet with your mentor at the YTCA yorkie specialty next week. It takes longer than a week usually to be accepted for a rescue. After you talk with your mentor and if you plan on breeding and showing, you will have your hands full!!! I have two rescues, so I do believe in the getting rescues, but I never had plans to breed or show.........strictly a pet situation. If after the meet, you decide that showing and breeding is not your "thing," then certainly move forward with getting your first yorkie via a rescue. JMO

oh, I'm not making any move before I meet her. I'm just considering this option if I decide to get a pet until I get a show pup.
