When to neuter/spay? I am planning on having both my guys neutered. My question is When did you have your Yorkie fixed and what made you decide that that was the right time? Would you recommend having both Brody & Brady done at the same time or one at a time? Reason I am asking, My hubby has a rottweiler, Gunnar. We got him on a limited paper thing. The breeder has "suggested" that we wait til he is between 12-18 months. Something about him getting to his potential size? I am not sure. I really did not pay that much attention. I planned on having him fixed regardless of his size...and did not care about papers since we were fixing him... I am sure my vet would have a recommendation but I have not found him yet since we just recently moved....lol But I am looking... |
With your larger breeds, testosterone does play a role in the development of body in males. However, it's not so significant that it makes a difference if your dog is a pet only - it's really only important for show quality dogs. With the smaller ones, there really is no difference in development. A lot of vets say 6 months is the time to spay/neuter, but many will alter pets much earlier than this. Your puppy needs to be at least 2lbs. Shelters will spay and neuter as early as 8 weeks to insure that the puppies adopted out will actually be altered, but I think that is probably really too early. I think anytime between 16 weeks and 6 months is a good time to do it, but it will depend on when your vet will do it because most still believe in that "6 month rule." As long as you have the funds, I'd have them neutered at the same time. They'll both recover at the same time and you'll only have to go through that once. |
I would recommend between 6-10 months. |
I had Ben neutered at 6 months. Here in the UK vets will not neuter or spay dogs until they are 6 months because they want them to develop properly first. Most vets here say for small breeds, 6 months, for medium breeds, 12 months and for large breeds, 18 months. Its because if you neuter or spay them before they have matured then the growth plates fuse later and that can leave them looking stragely 'leggy'. |
Thank you all for your advice and suggestions.....I am leaning towards having both neutered at 6 months. This way, will only have to go thru it once.....THanks Again |
Good idea!!! |
I think 6 months is the normal time to spay/neuter. |
