Should I Call UPS?? Today I was at home in the middle of the day & Roxie was in the backyard squirrel hunting, while Bubba was in the house doing what Bubba's do - NAPPING! Roxie started barking to be let in & when I opened the back door I saw my back gate was standing wide open. Roxie is so good she didn't escape, but if Bubba had been out there who knows where he would be right now, because an open gate to him is an invitation to see the world! I couldn't figure out who had opened the back gate. A short time later, I got in my car and as I backed out of my driveway I saw a box delivered by UPS on my front step. So I'm thinking, this must be the scenerio that happened: after the UPS guy knocked on the front door & I didn't hear him, he thought he would leave it in the back so no one would steal my package. But probably he opened the back gate & Roxie came running at him, he changed his mind, but didn't get the gate latched. I certainly am not looking to get a UPS guy in trouble, but I'm wondering if I should call them up & just let them know they should be more careful?? My babies could have been lost or killed or who knows what! I should say I live in a 110-plus year old house with solid walls & no door bell, and I was in the back of the house and this is probably why I didn't hear him knock. |
It's a good thing she is a good girl and didn't try to go for a walk alone...:p I would call... |
I came home one day and Rocky was in the driveway going from the gate to the house door and back. When I pulled in and opened the cardoor he jumped in my car. He's the ONLY one of the 3 that would stay by the house if loose. Chuck accidentally let him out when he came in carrying some boxes. I have a gate also, into the driveway. We put a chain and lock on it with a key on each side (hidden) so that we can open it quick if we need to. I would call UPS or if you don't have a local number can you contact them on the website? Don't know if the message would get to the driver. How frightening, I'm glad that all turned out ok for you. |
I would call, it can only help them to be safer!! |
I don't think I would call. I'm sure he didn't do it intentionally and maybe he thought it was securely latched and it wasn't. Or maybe he isn't a "dog person" and was rushing out. There could have been a lot of different scenarios. I'm glad she was a good girl and didn't leave the yard! |
You don't need to call UPS. If you follow the tracking information and notice that the package is listed as "Out for Delivery" status, then just leave a note for the UPS person on the front door or gate so they know what to do with the package and to ensure that they securely close the gate. Luckily nothing serious happened, but a phone call is not necessary. Or, if you see him around the neighborhood frequently and he is your regular driver and not a spare driver, just go up to him and tell him what to do next time. |
The note sounds like a good idea. |
I'm so glad she didn't run out!!!!! what a good girl!! i would definitely call, you just never know what good could come of it. |

I would call and just tell them nicely what happened. |
The people at the 800# aren't going to care. We had a "sub" driver screw up a couple deliveries and they weren't interested. When our regular guy got back from vacation we told him what happened and HE said he would fix the problem. It helps to have a good relationship with your UPS guy. Watch for him the next time he comes and explain the situation. Let him meet the dogs and realize they aren't scary. |
Also if it were me I would find a way to lock the gate. |
UPS has did that to my gate before and it makes me so mad |
Should I Call UPS?? Darned right, you should! They are trained to close them immediately just as utility readers are trained. I would call administration as well as write a certified letter and mail it. Your puppy's life may depend on this situation being corrected. I had to contact one of our utility company's some years ago. The problem was handled and it hasn't happened since. |
I would call! Something could have happened to your baby but luckily nothing did! I would have been mad or scared for my baby. |
I'd probably add a sign on your gate near the latch-- one of those BEWARE OF DOG signs would work, just so that anybody who goes to enter the yard is aware of the dog and doesn't enter the yard unless they know where the dog is. One of my neighbors when I was a small kid nearly lost their German Shepherd when the gas meter guy entered the yard while the dog was out there with the family's little boy. Their dog wasn't aggressive, but when someone was trespassing near her kid, she backed the meter guy into a corner and nearly bit him. There was a big fuss over it, but thankfully the animal control officers in our town sided with my neighbors in saying that she was only being the protection dog that she was born to be, and the gas guy should have been more careful. They put up one of those signs on their fence though, and from then on the meter guys would knock and ask them to take the dog out of the yard before they went back there. |
I don't think I would call, but a note would be much better. I'm sure it wasn't intentional accidents do happen. Thankfully your baby is okay and was a good girl and didn't wander off so really no harm done that a note wouldnt cure. I actually adore my UPS lady and so do my furkids, she leaves them treats with every package. My border collie actually goes to the truck if we are outside to get her treat, then she comes right back home. They get so excited when she pulls up. |
Thank you all for your feedback. I decided to call UPS, because I'm pretty sure either this was a substitute driver or a new driver, as normally packages are left on my front porch. My house sits on a hill, my porch is covered & some shrubs in front of the house generally block packages from view. Of course the only UPS number in the phone book is the 800 # - as soon as I got a person I asked for the local number & I was told there wasn't a number they could give me. The girl listened to my story, asked for the tracking # on the package & my phone number & told me that someone from the local office would call me back by the end of the business day today. I thought - yeah sure, but my phone rang about 5 minutes later & it was a gentleman here locally and he said he would be in contact with the driver's supervisor & the driver would be told of my concern that they be careful when leaving a package. I just don't want to get anyone in trouble because I know it wasn't on purpose. (My gate has been giving me problems ever since my lawn guy came the last time - he somehow changed the latch around & this morning I could hardly get the darn thing to open!) Now if I could just stop ordering things that have to be shipped! That darn HSN! |
