OMG I thought Truffles was going to get killed!
 

I live on a very busy road. My house sits back quite a ways from the road and we have a fence up around our property - however the driveway gate is always open (until we put it on remote). Last night, my husband had our "outside" dogs running in the yard and I was cooking with the front door opened. I put the xpen gate up against the doorway in the kitchen. When Truffles saw our outside dog, Chopper, near the front door, she broke through the gate and took off full speed toward the road!! She is my most reliable "come" doggie and I was trying all kinds of comes and she wouldn't stop! I felt helpless! I ran right into the road without even looking to try and let the cars see me since I figured they wouldn't see her! I didn't think about it and didn't look - and now I realize what could have happened! THANK GOD the cars coming up the road were too far away and the oncoming cars saw me and slowed down....she ran around the truck, from the street side into the fence side and I dived on the ground to catch her, but she escaped again! Luckily she ran back down the driveway, with Gemma now running by her side! OMG I was just in tears and now injured and barefoot mind you!
I don't know what got into her?! I take the girls in front all the time and they always just stay on the grass! But because she broke out herself, it was like a game I guess? I have never been so scared! I bought a babygate to go across our front porch now because I am not taking anymore chances! She is so naughty and so lucky!!

Thank God you weren't hit and she is okay too!!! Glad you got a baby gate and won't be trying to stop traffic anymore. Hope the road rash doesn't hurt too bad.

Wow thank god you are both ok, That happen to me when we first bought our home, I only had 2 babies at the time and they both slipped out and ran for the road, I can not run so my hubby took off after them and almost got hit by a car, that was most scariest time ever, the next day we put up our kennel. like you said , im not taking any more chances.

Glad everyone is okay. We just bought our 1st yorkie a couple of weeks ago. I have never seen little dogs that can run that fast. What you went thru is what I have been afraid of. If she would ever get out we couldn't catch her. THey do look at it like a game I think. Hopefully you want have to go through that again, with the new security.

Road rash is basically the same thing as carpet burn - I've had it before myself. When I had my Annie-Belle I dove after her once as well.

I am VERY glad BOTH of you are alright! I don't know what gets into these furbutts sometimes.

On a busy road? That is a "worst nightmare" for all of us. Thank God that you both ("all" in case your hubby and outside dogs took chase too) are okay with the exception of some road rash!!

What a scary experience! I am so glad you are both okay! Hope she doesn't escape again.

Oh how scary. This happened to me today with McKenzie, I was putting one of the other dogs in the house after we took a walk and she zoomed out into the yard to potty. I think she thought she was on leash. She didn't get anywhere near the road, but it scared the heck outta me!

OH MY!! That would scare me to death. Glad you are both ok. Hope you get your gate remote put in soon.

So, so scary. I had a similar experience and ran out onto a snow covered road, threw my arm up and yelled "stoooooooop" at oncoming traffic. Another time I dove off a deck on my lunch hour, in the rain while crying hysterically because he thought it was a game of chase.(and he was definately winning) I've Otis proofed every door and square inch of my fence since then! No more escapes. Thank Goodness you got her back. I'm sure the road rash was worth it to have her safe, you probably didn't feel it until she was back in the house!!

That's scary! I think she just wanted to play tag and didn't realize the dangers. I'm glad your both O.K!

First and foremost we are all glad that you are both OK - it's very scary and your heart is racing a mile a minute and you are not even thinking about yourself or what can happen. All you are thinking about is your baby and catching them. We had something similar around the 4th of July at my niece's house - she had the baby gate up to keep Izzy from going out to the main driveway out to the street - well we all were keeping an eye on her and then poof - she was not around - we called and called her and my heart was going fast and I was almost in tears - here because she is so small - that little stinker squeezed herself through the baby gate slats and meandered down the drive and down the sidewalk. Some people heard me calling her and they yelled from their car - "Hey lady - we think your dog is waaaay down there." I almost had a heart attack and then you don't want to scare them more cause they just run and fly out into the street...so I had to be real calm and have her come to me. Needless to say we have to put window screen on one side of the baby gate so she would not sneek through the little bugger.

You just never know with these guys.

omg you poor baby! I feel so bad for you ans feel your pain! I also live on a main street but live right on it,a month ago,Jasper got out ran under aUPS truck and back,I thought he waas dead!I hope the girls are ok and your rash is better! hugs! What a horrible,gut wrenching feeling!

Thank you! Deb, you know Crow Canyon road is where I live and THAT is the flippin' street Truffles was running down!!! There was definately an angel (Lexxi?) watching over us both last night!!

Thanks everyone...I see I'm not alone! Some of you know the adrenline, the fear and the helplessness I was feeling!! It's crazy that you don't even think about yourself at a moment like that! These babies are truely my daughters, and now I know I am not exadurating when I say that cause I felt like a mama tiger protecting her cub! At all costs! My friend says "look at you sacrificing your own life as if she were the president!!!" Damn skippy!!!

Goodness, I am glad your lil baby did not get hurt! How scarry it must of been for you!

I know! And unfortunately she is still trying to run out the door everytime it opens! I do not know what has gotten into her!? She is getting worse - she ran out again today, but she only went to the grass where I usually "allow" them to go, however she did not listen and come when I called her! I had to go get her!

I have a sitter staying here till Sunday while I'm outta town and I am a nervous wreck! I am gating the front porch while I'm gone for sure, and when we get back home......we are practicing some strict sit/stay and come commands!!!

No, you are most assuredly not alone. I think a good many of us have been in similar circumstances at one time or another. The fear is something you never forget. Hope your road rash isn't too bad.:(
