This may be a silly question....
 
Ok, so I've been looking for a yorkie puppy for a while now and I noticed that some breeders name their puppies and some don't. My boyfriend and I have been thinking about names for a while and we had picked out one that we realy liked. But, if I get a puppy from a breeder that has already named it, is it ok to rename the pup? I dont' want to confuse my new puppy, but we really like our name. :confused:

I think its fine, new home, new name. I'm sure the pup will take to his/her new name very quickly.

I'm sure that it's fine to rename the pup. Sometimes people may register the liters with names, so you might need to look into changing that as well... But the kid shouldn't get confused, just be consistent, pick one name when you get it and stick with it.

The experts tend to recommend changing names when you re-home anyway. Besides, a puppy will probably not know his name and will be happy to respond to any word you say with a happy voice. Loki and Sammy have at least 5 nicknames each and we did change Sammy's name when we got her - ands he was almost a year old.

:) We changed our pup's name when he came to us and then over the year (he is 1 year old now) and he has different versions of his name which he understands. He started with Siu Pao and they developed into "Pao", "Pao Chai" (means Little Pao), "Siu Paoee" or "Paoee", "Pao Chai Wai (Little Devil) :D

I named my litter of two boys, as a way of telling them apart....they respond to a happy tone and come running no matter what I say!! LOL When they are spoken for, I will start calling them the names that their new forever families choose for them. After you pick a puppy you could ask the breeder to call by the name you picked.

We name all our puppies, because we think that calling them by the color on their ribbons is just a bit impersonal for us.
It also helps us to remember them after they have left for their new homes.
When the puppies have been chosen by their new families we then begin calling them by their " forever " name. :)

By the way, we keep in touch with all our puppies and new families and they have never had a confusion problem when changing the name. :animal-pa

IF the breeder has named the puppy and already registered it, as some do to protect the kennel name, you cannot change that name. It's a done deal according to AKC that name will stay with the dog for life. HOWEVER, you can always change the call name. I have registered my babies both ways. I had one litter where I individually registered each puppy and named it with my program name as a prefix. ex: Dee's Lil' Sophie Showstopper. It wasn't an issue with any of my buyers and My Sophie went to a family that had already puiucked out the name Sophie

It'll be your dog so you would be able to name it. Some breeders will put their last name on the AKC for instance Rhodes......., and you get to pick out the rest. They do this to track their pedigree.

I do not think you would confuse him! I did the same thing with my baby. Her breeder used to call her Starlet. I called Stella. I did not notice any behavior'r problem. :)
