Yorkies Hello first off my name is Jack and I live in Texas. I just recently got married and after a long disscusion i convinced my wife to keep my Two Dobermans Princess and Lucky and my German Shperd Shep in the house all AKC. my wife however wants despertaly to adopt a yorkie and i was wandering if anybody has had any experiance with yorkies and larger breed expecially those like the ones i have. thank you. |
Welcome to YT! When I was a kid, we are talking about the60'sI had my1st yorkie and my folks had 2GSD"S,I remember watching my yorkie like a hawk when it was a pup an never leaving her alone.when I was in school or out, and she was not being directly watched by an adult, she was crated!Even the most well intentioned big dogs can be rough with a tiny yorkie. She grew to 7 lbs,was an irish imprt an then would romp with them supervied by the pool if my mrmory serves me1 good luck @ congrats! |
I think it's definitely possible. I recommend a larger yorkie though (at least 6lbs or more) as the tinier ones can be very fragile. I would also never leave the yorkie alone with the larger ones - supervision is the key. |
I agree, if you're going to get one, then get one that will be larger, and keep a good eye on them. |
Welcome to YT. I don't have any big dogs in my house, but Aubrey LOVES to play with big dogs. I guess it would just depend on how the puppy is. |
Welcome to YT! The breeder where I bought both of my girls, also breeds Rotties. One of the Rotties is an inside dog and THINKS she's a Yorkie!! She is very very good with the puppies and the adults. However, she was raised inside with the Yorkies so she is used to them running and bouncing all over the place. I too, think it's possible to have a big dog with a Yorkie. My only worry is that the bigger dog would step on the Yorkie or play to rough..I wouldn't want to take any chances and leave them alone together. Good Luck! |
HI welcome to YT, Well I also suggest a larger Yorkie, and I made 2 ferrets and a yorkie wor with no problems so I am sure you can make it go with larger dogs. Good Luck! ;) |
Congratulations on your marriage and welcome to YT! I don't have much experience with the dogs you mentioned, but I think you have been given some good advice. |
I think, regardless of size, ANY two breeds of dogs would be fine together IF: a. they do not have a tendency towards dog aggression b. you know them to be gentle dogs c. they are introduced properly on neutral ground |
I think it depends on the personality of the bigger dog as to whether they will do well with a yorkie. We have a black lab and my Bitsy (who is 3 1/2 pounds)... just barks and barks at him outside... and he just seems "kind of amused"!! ;) Welcome to YT!! |
I also think that it depends on the age of the larger dogs. my brother has one of the most well behaved Golden Retrievers and we take our dogs to go play with them sometimes. But he is only two and sometimes doesn't know his own strength, or he gets worked up easily, which can be potentially dangerous for my dogs. We just keep a close eye on them, and at first, we just put them in a crate so they could smell each other without romping around together, and the big dog eventually laid down next to them like they were his little babies! So even well tempered dogs can do damage while having a good time. Just keep a close eye out. I know my dogs let other dogs know when they are crossing the line! |
We have 2 Yorkies, and 1 GS, They do very well together. We watch Silas (GS) with Seth and Sasha, Sasha keeps everyone in line including Silas. I agree with the other moms here keep an eye on everyone. Welcome and Congrat.:D |
I'm in the same boat here with Cody. One of my two year old labs (who used to stay with us in the house) is back in because she is going into heat and don't need her to get pregnant. When she was in the house she kept climbing over the electric fence to get back into the pen with my three other labs (my house is too small for four big labs), anyway we put her back in the pen with them, but I don't need her out there in heat. So we brought her back in the house until she's done and can get fixed. Cody does not like her! he's scared of her of course 'cause of her size but she just sniffed at him and that was it. I'm sure in a week when she smells really good to him he'll change his mind:rolleyes: :( We'll see how it goes. P.S. he is still intact, no we are not looking to have laborkies she wears a diaper |
