New Member and Yorkie owner! Hello everyone! I am bringin' home a new Yorkie puppy today and SO excited! :Puppy: I am a bit worried that I won't measure up to be a good mommy (like you all are - since you are all Yorkie Professionals!) but, I hope you won't mind me coming to you for advice once in a while. Here's the scoop: 6 weeks old today, male, w/o AKC papers, purebred But, my puppy did not have tail docked. A bit concerned about having that done, but it is recommended by a friend - I wonder how much it will cost me? And to hurt the puppy - is that OK? Hmmmm.... What do you all think? Docking Hi! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Glad to have you here! About the tail, I personally would leave his tail alone, but that's just my opinion. I think the tails are cute!! I've seen some cute pics posted here of yorkies with tails. I think tails are usually docked when they are only a few days old, I don't know if you can do it at this age, but I'm sure one of our breeders here would know if that is what you'd like to do. Good luck with your new puppy and welcome to YT. Oh, and post some pictures when you can........we love pictures here!! |
Picture of my new baby! Thanks! I posted a pic in the Photo Gallery. He's not named yet...but soon. :) |
Hi! Welcome to YT! We were all new owners to begin with. I am sure you will do beautifully! Tail docking is usually done at 4 days old. I would probably wait. I agree they look awfully cute with tails, in other countries it is illegal! Maybe you could do it when you neuter if you have that done. Surgeries are not good for these little guys. Does he have a name yet? How big is he right now! And pictures are always essential !! :D |
Thanks! He's pretty small. I was told his weight and forgot already, but I'll post it later when he comes home. No name yet...thinkin' of "Copper" or "Prince" so far. My 2 kids suggested "Elmo". And hubby wants "Cujo" (ewwwwww!) :p |
awww welcome to you and your little puppy =) --Sissa :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
That's a tiny baby!!! Welcome to YT! Here is a link to the image of your baby: http://www.yorkietalk.com/gallery/sh...php/photo/3499 |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! I bet you're so excited to bring him home. Heck, you might have already gone. I can't wait to see more pictures and hear more stories about him. I think it's a good idea to wait to name him so you can figure out what his personality is like so you can match a name with it. I haven't seen an undocked tail on YorkieTalk yet, so he'll be a special one around here! :p |

Welcome to YT. There is a world of information here. I am a first time Yorkie Mom. Maggie is now 4 months old. I don't know what I would have done, without YT members. You might say, members have raised her cyberspace way. You might want to stay away from names that end with the sound "O".. I have read that the dog gets confused with it's name and the word "No". |
congratulations on your new puppy. im sure you will take good care of your new baby. |
He is just your baby not a show dog so why put him and yourself through it? It's kinda like plastic surgery because you want to change your looks. When they are three days old is the recommended time, not several weeks. I'm sure he would come through ok if that is what you want to do. It is dangerous to put these little guys out and since he is older it would be painful not to. |
Look at my posts! I have over 900 now! Sully, my yorkie, is my 1st dog ever, let alone my 1st yorkie, of course. When I joined this thread a few months ago (Sully is 10mo. old now) I knew NOTHING about yorkies. Well, a little from the research I'd done, but nothing like I know now!!!! Spend enough time on this website and you'll be "professionals" like the rest of us. There are so many REAL professionals here ready to give you any advice you need. I should be paying a monthly fee to this site for how much it's helped and entertained me!!!! :) Welcome! |
I think that you should leave the tail. I always wanted a Yorkie with a tail, but the breeders I got mine from did it. So, I think they are cute with tails. Good luck with the new pup. Feel free to post pics and questions after you get the puppy! |
Welcome, you will be a great Yorkie mommy we were all new at one time!! |
Welcome to YT . 6 weeks old is very young . |
Oh, you all are great - this feedback really helps. I'm a little concerned about my breeder now, after reading this thread. He insisted on the pups all leaving today - they all just turned 6 weeks old. And, he was a big advocate on not docking the tail. Seems it is a subject with different opinions. Because this pup is going to be my new baby, I'm happy with him just the way he came. I've no plans to breed or show with this pup, just bought it to love......so I've decided to leave the tail as-is. 6 weeks old.....wow.....such a baby - good thing I'm at home 24 hours a day. I planned being with the pup every moment anyways, so that's good. I'm very happy with my pup, but now wished I had known all this info, before adopting the first puppy I found available. But, like I said, I bought myself a adorable companion, and going to try really hard to be a good mommy! I lost a baby a few months ago, so this will help me to ward off that sadness a little bit . I have 2 kids already (ages 12 and 6) and they are SO excited about the pup. No name yet for the little dude! |
I'm fairly new to the Yorkie community, too. You sure do learn alot in these forums, and everyone is so willing to help with issues!! It's great. Your Yorkie will become like a baby to you. Miss Pippa is more like our spoiled youngest child! I have never loved a pet like I love this one. Congratulation and Good Luck!! :) |
Congrats on your new baby, it is sad they are selling these babies so young. |

Congrats about getting a puppy!!! I am sure you will be a great mommy! Now about the docked tail I am pretty sure you can only do within the first 2 days of being born. At least that was what we were told when we had boxer puppies. That way it heals and supposedly they dont feel it but that was a LIE! Our puppies were 1 day old and they screamed and it was horrible. I wasnt even in the room with the vet becasue i get easily sick to my stomach. But I could still hear em down the hall. I will never do that again. I wouldnt recommend it. Chloes tail(my yorkie) is so cute. Besides they do so much of thier body language with thier tail and that is too cute to miss out on. Good luck |
