Silky vs Yorkie??? 4 Attachment(s) Okay... I have a question. I tried looking at the differences between Silkies and Yorkies online and they're kind of vague. :confused: What are the main difference to look for? I am asking because someone asked me if my Dunks was a Silky the other day when we were at the dog park. SO I looked up what a Silky looks like and it looks like a freakin Yorkie! LoL So, I thought, why not ask my fellow YTers for some help. I attached pictures of my Dunks when he was a puppy to the most recent pics I have of him... He's also a teapot.. he weighs 14 lbs (last time I checked)... So, yeah, what's the difference? :confused: (** 1st two pics are his puppy pics and the last 2 are his most recent pics**) THANKS GUYS!! |

half the time people thought our Peanut was a silky when he was a puppy cuz he doesn't fit the stereotype. The best thing to do is ask a vet or someone knowlegeable in person. But generally the hair isn't as smooth on Silky's as they are on yorkies. Yorkies weight ranges from 2lbs all the way to 14 that I've heard of, but generally should be around 6-7lbs full grown. Silky's are full grown around 11-15 I think. That's my extent of info, sorry! |
around here (in Illinois) I've seen a lot of people who have Silky-Yorkies, where someone along the way was breeding both together, therefore both sets of features were apparent. |
lol That has been brought up on this forum more times than I can count. I think there is probably only one way to know for sure and that is through dna. If you want to read all of the previous threads on this, do a search. The search button is on the blue bar at the top. I think you'll find it interesting.:) |
Yeah I know.. I did do the search.. there were a lot of pages!! LoL I am on the phone (on hold) right now with my Vet... I asked about DNA testing and apparently the lady that answered the phone .. SO my Vet doesnt do a DNA test.. Hmmmmm... Silkie or Yorkie I LOVE my furball!! His coat is very soft and silky (LoL-no pun intended)... |
The breeder I purchased my first Yorkie from also bred Silkys. This is the description of a Silky: Silky Terrier: The Silky already has lots of Yorkie in its bloodline so they do have a lot in common. In fact the Silky was created by mixing the Australian Terrier (which already had Yorkie in them) and the Yorkshire Terrier. So, they really DO look a lot alike and have very similar temperments and intelligence. The Silky's coat does not grow as long (rarely do you need to cut it), their nose is longer, and they are more muscular/tougher than the delicate Yorkie. They also have no known health problems. |
Oh and the standard weight of a Silky Terrier is 8-11 lbs. |
Thanks for the info.... I have been researching the same thing and was confused. My male also weighs around 12 pounds and his mother is supposed to be a silky. I just didn't have a good definition.....makes sense to me now. |
