Yorkie goes potty when there is no pee pad there!!! Hi All...I have a very strange issue. I had thought my yorkie was potty trained, but it seems that she is not. She usually goes potty in one particular place in her play pen...it's starting to become pretty consistent so we were very happy about that. I had some concern that it was the pad's location in the pen and NOT the pee pad itself. The other day, I took the pee pad out and put it in another area of the pen. She went right toward her normal location and #1 and #2 and then looked at me like she did something wonderful. I was actually a little bit disappointed. I did other tests as well, and she kept going in that same location, even though there is no pee pad there. How would you suggest correcting this problem? I was going to recrate train her, but I'm not sure if this is the best idea. Thanks so much. |
She might be use to the pad being there, and then shes think that its there so she can go to the bathroom there. |
i agree. i'm just not sure what to do to help her recognize that it is the pad she is supposed to pee on... |
lexi did that too, but this was in the living room where i used to have the pad and then i deceided i didnt want it there anymore so i put something in that spot, like a toy or just something to cover that area.. it will work |
i understand what you mean. My dogs know to potty in a certain place. It's not that they know they are going on potty pads (which they do), its that they know the area they are allowed to potty. If I moved the pad, I'm sure they would go back to that area. |

i had to slowly move that wee pad into the next room where is wanted her to go. it took a long time, and its about 20 feet too, but she finally goes in the right place now... once in awhile she will go in that place and it pisses me off and she knows she did wrong. your baby will get it sooner or later i promise |
leakage i agree that she thinks it is the spot, not the pad. however, sometimes the pads Do let seepage thru. you should try to clean the area with some sort of odor neutralizer to see if that helps. |
yeah I would say slowly move the pad once every couple days a tiny bit closer to where you want it to go eventually. Only a couple inches each time you move it. It might be a slow process, but I think she'll get it. Also someone else mentioned neutralize the old area just in case there is any residual smell ... that might help too... regular white vinegar will neutralize it. Good Luck!! |
Some people put plastic shower curtains under the play pens. As has been suggested, I've read where lots of people do slowly move the pads to where they want them to go. |
hey everyone! thanks for all the responses. definitely very helpful! i guess it's ok if she recognizes the location at home...the main reason that i want her to recognize the pee pad is so we can bring her to other ppl's houses. everytime we visit someone's house, she soils their carpet because she cannot find her play pen. in other instances, if i bring her out with me all day, she will hold it, which i don't think is good for her. has anyone had success with having their pup recognize the pee pad itself? that way, no matter where the pup is, she will be able to eliminate in the correct spot... |

We have finally resorted to trying the pee pads but it is difficult. She will pee right next to it. My sister was able to train her dog to use a little litter box and it has worked out great. We will keep trying. |
