Sadie had her day in court!!!!!! Well as many of you might remember, back in May I posted that Sadie was attacked by a husky on are walk. After trying to get a hold of the other dogs owners (with no luck) We contacted animal control. Sadie had injuries to her little head and had to be seen by the vet. She is doing great now, but her fur on top of her head is still a mess. We have just went to court over this matter and we settled with the other owners. They have to pay for her vet. bills. I wasn't sure if we should settle or not, because by doing this nothing else happens. I was really hoping that the dog and his owner would get some training. During the attack the other owner kept yelling she didn't know how to make him stop. But if we took it to the next leave and didn't take the offer, the dog would most likely be put down. My biggest fear is that this dog attacks a little kid, but I know that he was acting on his instincts (or at least that is what my vet. said) and Sadie must have looked like a little animal of prey. I know after talking to the father for a little bit that this dog is his daughters baby, I just hope that they get some training and I didn't make a BIG mistake. What do you all think? Amy:confused: |
I think you did the right thing. Hopefully he will keep a better eye on the dog, and some training might really be needed. Glad everything went in your favor! |
I agree... I would hate to be responsible for another dog being put down. We had a similar incident with a Basingi (not sure on the spelling) They are like hunting/fox dogs... Tried attacking our Peanut. The owner even told us that we'd better keep Peanut away from her dog cuz he might attack. I asked her why she would bring her dog to a PUBLIC DOG PARK and not keep a close eye on her dog... she walked away. Sorry, but yes, I agree you did the right thing |
I think that even if you settled, there should still have been some kind of stipulation. I thought if animal control got involved over an attack or bite, the dog had to be quarantined for a certain amount of time and registered as a "dangerous" dog. I think they do that here anyway. There are certain stipulations for dangerous dogs...like being muzzled on walks and obvioulsy 100% obeying leash laws. The dog needs some behavial training |
I think you did the right thing. But the owner of the dog should be far more careful of their own dog...they got lucky this time b/c you were kind enough not to take it to the next level...however, if this dog decides to attack a young child b/c it looks like its prey, then that's a whole different story. Anyone who owns a dog is responsible and accountable for their dogs actions. |
I believe that in Michigan, a dog must have more than one severe biting report on file before action is really taken, and I think (although I don't agree) that it is only for attacking humans. Amy, I'm so glad that Sadie is going better. Sadie may never have the same hair again since she kind-of was scalped in a few areas, but she'll always be your baby and very special miracle girl!! I do think the dog and owners need some kind of training class, but they would also have to really follow those guidelines all the time and most people just won't. Very sad!! |
I think you went with your heart and that's always a good thing. Maybe you can go over and have a nice talk with this guy about training his dog for the dog's sake. I also could never have requested that his daughter's baby be put to sleep. I'm glad your little sweetie is okay. |
I think you did what you thought was right in your heart, and you can't go wrong with that. |
mi laws and county laws From what we have been told, here Wayne county (Mi) it only takes one bite. The dog is only taken at the time of the bite if it's a person it has bitten. Our next step would have been to go in front of a judge. If the judge deems the dog vicious, then the dog owner has two options. First is to move it out of the county, if the owner can't do so, then the dog is put down. And if you settle, you are only entitled to your vet cost, you can NOT ask that the dog gets training..... I tried!!!!!!!!!!! From what I can make of this whole thing is that it just depends on what state and also what county you live in. Thank all of you for your thoughts. Sadie's hair may never grow back the same way, but I love her the same (maybe even more!) Thanks again Amy |
