What is too young?? My baby was born on 11/8 and I am picking her up on 12/26. Is that too young to bring a puppy home? At what age do they usually come home? |
I got my Bradley when he was 7 weeks old. I think that is the normal time you can take them home but I am not really sure either. |
too young Yorkie's should be 12 weeks old before going to new homes. It is suggested longer than for larger breeds. If you wait until they are older you can be sure of the dogs health and what problems your puppy may have. |
Higgins was 7 1/2 weeks old and weighed 1.5 lbs. when we brought him home. The vet said he was fine to bring home at that age and would bond well with us. Aside from a case of coccidiosis, which cleared right up, he's been a happy, healthy little boy. If we had waited, this little $450 puppy would have been GONE ..... with someone else! It is my opinion that good breeders hang on to pups a little longer.........but I sure am happy we got Higgins, because we could not afford to pay more for a puppy and really wanted a Yorkie. We fell in love when that little bundle came running right up to us, even though we had come to see his little sister. We wanted a little female, but Higgins wanted US! In defense of the breeder, Higgins mom and dad were there and really darling, well-cared-for dogs. LOVED Higgins mom! She wanted to get in the car with us and come home with her pup! |
I brought Dolce home when she was 8 weeks old. She weighed about a pound. She has had no health problems and was always a very happy playful puppy. I know breeders like to wait till about 12 weeks old before you take the pup home, but we had driven a long way to get her and she was so adorable, so they let us take her. Thank goodness!!! I think JD will be ok and he'll love his new home!! |
I have also heard of the 12 week preference but Tatum came home with us at exactly 9 weeks old. We have never had a single health issue. I believe she weighed right at 1.5 pounds when we took her to the vet the next day. I really trusted our breeder after having long conversations with her and felt that she wouldn't send our baby home with us if she wasn't comfortable with it. Good luck on the new pup! |
Lady was 7weeks old and weighed in at a tiny 8oz when I bought her home, she was fine..not one single problem at all.Jessi was 8 weeks old and weighed just under 2lbīs. She was bigger, but was also fine:) Some breeders wont let their pups go until they are 12 weeks old,and if they are tiny, sometimes older, but others are fine with letting them go at 7-8 weeks old. As I said before,Lady only weighed 8oz when I got her and she was fine,no different to Jessie. |
Thanks everyone! I feel better now that I know you guys did it and had no problems. I was talking to the breeder yesterday and she said he is 5 weeks and 1lb so I think he should be fine. :) |
No problem JDsmom....we all get nervous bringing home our babies. Please post some pics of your little one when they come home. We love seeing those yorkie pics!!! |
JDsMom ... I'm sure you will be just fine with your new baby. I'll bet you are really getting excited too! Although Toto was 16 wks. when we finally got to bring her home, we were terrified of her! :) I think one thing that really helped was that we were able to be with her 24/7. If she yawned ... we were right there! :) I suspect that it was much tougher for us than it was for Toto!! Can't wait to hear all about your baby and see pics!! ;) |
brownie andkayko were both 8 weeks |
toby was twelve weeks when we got him...... i felt better getting a dog whose breeder let him go at this age, plus it made it easier to spot any problem or sickly puppies out of the bunch (one was rather lethargic, but he might not have had his nutrical yet) |
