talking to your yorkie . ? many people just talk to their yorkie as if it were a human . some think that they can understand exactly what they're saying and some just pretend . s0o ... here's a few questions ; 1. Can yorkies really understand what you're saying ? 2. if so, how ? 3. if not, can you teach them to understand? how? 4. how do you get your yorkie to sit there and look you in the eye, listen to you, and not move? thanx for answering =] |
1. Yes, because Aubrey knows certain words, where I have said the word then done something. 2. Like you want to go outside, he turns his head side ways and when I get up he will run to the door. 3. It took practice along with pet trainng for him to learn key words. and then I think they just catch on, like little babies. 4. Training, was when he learned to sit and "look at me" |
Mine know out, sleepy time, & kennel up. I really think they understand a lot more then they let on. |
I think mine probably understands bits and pieces of what I'm saying. For example, if I say something like Come Sammy, Let's go get some of that food you've been waiting for. He definetely understands "food". and when I get angry, of course I talk to him like I do to my daughter, and he bows his head down in shame and walks away. Its actually quite funny to watch |
Jake understands alot. If I say "do you want to go bye bye?", he gets really excited and runs to the door, then sits and waits for me to put on his vest and leash. If I say "do you want to eat?", he runs to the kitchen and waits by his food dish. If I say "the kids are here", he gets very excited and waits at the door for my grandchildren to come in. He loves them! He gets excited if he hears the word "outside", so sometimes we have to spell that around him. He also understands if I tell him to go get certain toys. He has several toys that he can identify. I think talking to your yorkie is a good thing. They learn by different inflections in your voice, etc. I'm sure he doesn't understand everything I say, but he certainly understands quite a bit. |
Besides basic commands my two definitely know 'Time to go nigh-nigh', 'Are you hungry?' and 'Momma has to go to work':) |
Mine know all the names in our family (mommy, daddy, & our kids names). They know the names of the dogs next door. They know the basic commands and they know, outside, go potty, pick up (when we pick them up, they turn and position themselves for us to pick them up), bye, cheese, no bark, they know alot of their toy names, they know the word bath, (we have to spell it), night night, and probably more I am forgetting. They know when they see a green bag that it has flossies in it. When my husband comes back from traveling, he always brings them a treat and they will root around in his bag and find it. Carley (who likes to go) understands when we say "yes, you can go, or you have to stay here" she will pout if we say she has to stay. These are smart little guys, it doesn't take them long to pick things up. Mine are both just over a year old. |
I don't know how but first time I told her to "turn around", she did!!!! Ever since then, she knows when I tell her to turn around. I'll try to video the command and post it. (If I can figure out how to post the video...) (I use that command when she jumps in to the purse so I have to tell her to turn around to face front instead of the back!!!) |
oh my god !! how did you teach your furbabies all these things ?! did they just pick it up, or did you have to really down, look them in the eye, and explain these things to them ? im s0o lost ! :( |
Haha, mine just caught on. I don't think you can look them in the face and teach them these things. :). It will take time, your baby is a little over 3 months, I say give it a few more months. You will see he will just catch right on! |

MM.. I guess certain toys you could give a name to it, but I don't think you can name EVERY toy. |
My girls understand when I say; "let's get yogurt" (this is their breakfast) "anyone want a nana?" (their banana snack in the afternoon) "wanna go for a walk?" "let's go bye-bye" "time for dinner" "do you need to go potty", "let's go outside" 'Night-night time" THey definitely know their names and i I'm in the bathroom and I ask if they want a drink, Angel will come running to drink out of a dixie cup. It wasn't anything special I did, other than to just use the same works with each action. |
1. Can yorkies really understand what you're saying ? Loki can, Sammy can't. 2. if so, how ? Loki has a HUGE vocabulary. He probably understands over 100 words and he can understand phrases. I can say "your dinner is downstairs" and he will look at me and RUN downstairs. If I say "your ball is downstairs" he won't care. I can tell him "we are going outside then you need to go in your crate" he will remember to go to his crate when he comes inside. This is from taking classes as a puppy, positive reinforcement training, and repetition. You must use the same words for each thing. You can't say "go to your bed" "in your bed" "go lay on your bed" We say "target bed" but it doesn't matter if you say "watermelon" as long you always use the same words. Loki will also do anything for a treat, so he pays attention. He is constantly waiting for a command so he can get a treat. 3. if not, can you teach them to understand? how? It helps if you start as a puppy. I haven't learned how to communicate well with Sammy yet. Loki and I can practically read each other's minds. I am continuing to be repetitive with her. She got a late start, but she is learning the important words like "dinner" and "outside". 4. how do you get your yorkie to sit there and look you in the eye, listen to you, and not move? Food. And the command "watch me" Teach them that you give a command, they do the command, and they get a treat. They will constantly be watching you for cues. It also helps to use words they already know to keep their attention. |
