I also wanted to know how do I get him to bark at the door when he needs to go potty? I have been taking him out every 2 to 3 hours to prevent accidents in the house. I saw a show on Oprah where they were teaching a dog to ring a bell when they needed to potty. Has anyone tried that?

Hi, and welcome! Glad you found us:) Potty training is somehting that will take time and you just have to stick to your normal schedule, whether its raining or not. I have pinestraw thats where my babies use the bathroom at when its raining. You could try using an umbrella.

I don't know if you can train them to bark. I know you can train them to ring bells. Mine just go to the door automatically now, because they know thats where they do their business.

First off if you want to use an excellent dog shampoo and conditioner, then try the #1All Systems. I use it an find it to be the best, and I've tried many dog shampoos on foster Yorkies over the many years.

As for training. If your dog will not go out in the rain, then I suggest on rainy days to put him in an expen with a wee-wee pad at one end and attach it to the front of his wire crate. Put in a kong and a nylabone and attach the water dish to the side of the pen. Pet stores sell this type of dish as well as Petedge.www.petedge.com/exercisepens
I don't take mine out in the rain at all. When it rains I just put a couple of wee-wee pads down. I'm not fond of having them soaking wet several times a day. ;)

It takes a long time to potty train them, and mine hate the rain too. I just pick them up, and put them out there. What kind of shampoo are you using. I use mane & tail you can get it at Walmart and it works well.

Personally, I think you are doing really well with potty training! :thumbup: My husband is Gizmo's primary caregiver while I am at work during the day and he is disabled, so we don't take Gizmo outside for pottying at all. We are pee pad training and it works for us. The suggestions made above sound really good.

I have heard about the bell training and I think we have a YT vendor who sells them. Don't we?? I want to say Katherine V, but I will have to go look. I'll post again when I find it.

My yorkie and I love to walk in the rain but hate cold mornings and anything below 20 degrees for walking so I trained her to pee pads at 3 yrs old and for 10 years I have had one down if I am away longer than I think etc. Since she is 13 she does need one more often and it has always worked for her.

Get an x pen and cover the entire bottom with pee pads (get incontinent pads at the drug store, they are less expensive.) Put his water and food in one far corner from where he will do his business. He will have no other place but the pee pad to use so he will get used to it. I think litter training is harder since they like to circle and have room and they don't seem to like to have to go into a box where the pad is flat to the floor. Once you have this up three or four weeks he will get used to the feel and also what is allowed.
When you take the xpen down be sure to leave a pee pad out in the spot you want with his urine on it....not a clean pad. I never had a hard time with mine going outside too. I don't know what to tell you about the rain except he's still such a baby and as he gets older it may be something he will take for granted.

I use Hartz puppy shampoo (gentle jasmine fragrance). I love the smell but after a day or two his hair just doesn't look as fresh and clean as it did when I first washed him. But this may be because i'm training him outside. I also brush his coat in the evening before bed. I spray his coat with simple solutions coat conditioner spray first and then brush unitl its dry.

Will it confuse him if I start paper traing him now? I don't want to have a major set back. But with the kids starting back to school, and the conflicting scedules between my husband and I i'm not sure what best for him at this point:confused:.

I have a baby of 3 months that is struggling in the potty training department. I'm consistant with her, but like everyone else has said, it just takes time. I am training my Maya to use a potty bell. She has independantly rung it only one time, but that means that she'll eventually get it! Pepe Mint is actually the YTer that mentioned that I might like to try it. She has great tips (as do all experienced YTers!) and told me to buy the bells that people put on their fishing line (2 packs) and some decorative ribbon. This has worked well, but I bet the ones Judy suggested are much prettier! I make Maya ring the bell with her paw or her nose EVERY SINGLE TIME she goes outside. Even if she doesn't want to, I help her do it so she understands that the bell means outside. Now when i take her to the door and say "Let's go outside Maya" she'll reach up and ring the bell.

Do what works for you! I love this option because you can hear it!

Welcome to YT. Yorkie potty training can be frustrating on the best days!! I actually put my girls in the X-pen outside to potty as otherwise they will roam the yard forever. In the X-pen, they know it means to do their business. They both hate the rain also, but at least they potty quickly. If it raining really hard, I many times will go out with an umbrella and try to keep them as dry as possible. Using a raincoat on them works well also (I know it sounds silly). I think mostly they don't like the wet grass and wet feet!!!!

Many pups can be trained for paper. Sissy doesn't like to use the wee wee pads, but in a pinch will. Angel uses the wee wee pads all the time and will go outside as well. Neither of them bark when they need to go out. Sissy will sit and look at me and sometimes make a whiney noise. I haven't tried the bells as we are upstairs most of the time during the day and neither of them will go downstairs!!!! But, there are several on here who use them with great success.

Bell Training
 

Yes my yorkies are bell trained.How I did it was quite simple every time I took them out as puppies I would ring the bell that hung on the door knob and say "do you want to go out?" making sure that they were on the floor by the door because it is so easy just to carry them out. Though we did have our fair share of accidents they seemed to catch on quite fast. One thing that is important is to keep the bell on a long string so that they can reach it. don't let them play with it as a toy when they do catch on to ringing the bell treat this as "cause and effect" ringing the bell equals going out to potty rain or shine.Don't get discouraged you will get some fails alarms at first.Hope this is helpful good luck!! Jewels wont go outside when its raining either. I have a covered front porch an she will go out there and go

WHO would want to potty in the rain, anyway...I know I WOULDNT!

Chelsea has a doggie door, and waits until the rain stops, sometimes out of necessity, she does go, but gives us that YORKIE DIRTY LOOK, as if we can control the rain.
