Is it a Yorkie Thing? Chewy is my first Yorkie (first dog too), and I often wonder if his little quirks are just his quirks, or if they are a "yorkie thing". I thought it would be fun to list some of their quirks, and others can respond if their dogs do it too.:) 1- Chewy seems a little afraid of his food dish. He goes up to it, grabs a piece of food real quick, then goes across the room to eat it. 2- When he plays fetch, evertime he brings the toy back, he drops it, then puts a paw over it to protect it. He looks at me like he's saying, "Just try to get it!" So cute. 3- He seems deathly afraid of fire hydrants. Anyway, those are just a few quirks. Let me know if your pup does the same thing, and list a couple of their quirks!:) :) |
:D JMO but from experience, too, is that these are yorkie personality traits. When they exhibit fear of anything, such as the fire hydrant, you want to take them to it and show it to them up close and say it's all right. Whenever they exhibit unwarranted fear of something, don't baby them or you'll encourage them to be fearful. Just say it's all right and they'll learn as they get older. If the food bowl is aluminum, that could be the reason he is scared of it - perhaps the sound of the food against the metal is scaring him. If it is aluminum, you might want to try crockery. Just don't use plastic food or water bowls because they can get contact dermatitis. As far as the ball is concerned, I have to laugh here, because yorkies IMO and experience are quite possessive of their toys and do frequently dare you to try to get them. Just a game.:D |

Logan also must get out every toy he owns when we have company over. He also kicks his back legs after he potties. |

If your pup wears tags all the time it may scare him when they clink against the dish. |

Chewy does the toy thing, but does not do the potty thing. Funny!:D |
Oh, my, Chewy is adorable.:p Kacee will hop up on the couch or just lay on the floor with it between her paws and lay her chin on it, but she won't look directly at me!:D Sometimes she'll just stand there with it in her mouth as if she is saying, "Don't you wish you had a ball, too?" I've never seen any other dog besides a yorkie do this. |
Yup, my Zoe does #2 too, but more in a playful manner. Sometimes we laugh and think if you want us to throw the ball, then give it up. |
Piper just chows down, but Penny has to play with her food first. |
Lucy hops up and down like a bunny when we or anyone else enters the house. She will hop over to a guest with he tail wagging like crazy then run back to me, then run back over to them...It is the cutest thing. She loves people and has to kiss everyone she meets! The other thing she does is when I say "elevator" she sits immediately and looks up at me because she knows it means she's coming up on the bed or couch :) When it comes to her food, she will take a few pieces out of her bowl at a time, take them over to her bed and eat them then go back for more. Yorkies have the cutes quirks! |
Peaches likes to get some food walk away and eat it... but she does not seem to be afraid... Rascal our boy stands over top the dish and eats away. Baby likes to get some out toss it up and play with it and growl then finally eat it. LOL Rascal does the foot over the toy thing all the time. He thinks every toy that comes in the house is HIS all His... LOL I cant think of anything they are afraid of Precious, beings she is only 4 weeks as of Friday has not yet had a chance to develope many unique traits. But she is sure cutey |
Yorkie quirks! 1 Attachment(s) Chelsea will scoot her metal bowls around if empty. If you dont get up, she comes to you and does a stare down, and walks in circles, if you ignore her, she starts barking at you-"HEYYYY--ANYBODY NOTICE MY BOWLS ARE EMPTY???" :D She had ceramic bowls, until she broke one, actually took it out thru the doggie door, on to the patio and dropped it. She fears paperback books. Once I was reading, and dropped my book on the floor, she was nearby so it fightened her. Now, if she sees me reading, she runs away from me. I have put a paperback on the floor and she wont go near it, walks clear around it. |
lol the toy thing is hilarious!!! whenever princess plays "catch".. she'll run to get the ball, come back with it and drops it in front of you wagging her tail, but AS SOON as you reach to rethrow it, she grabs it and runs off... this happens a few more times until i can grab it faster than she does and can finally rethrow it.. |
Cody won't eat out of his food dish.. he likes to eat his food off the floor and sometimes he grabs a piece and runs with it to eat in different spot... . When we play with his toys he does that I dare you to get it. Cause he isn't playing with them and I go to get it and he covers it up so i cant get it ( i love it) He thinks he has to have his toys scattered all over the place even though he doesnt play with them all . He barks if the wind is blowing the leaves or plants. (thats hilarious). he growls then barks. |
Gizzie does the food thing too! She will creep up to the bowl, ever so sneaky, grab one kibble and run and eat it across the room. Also if there is a piece of food under her bowl or somewhere hard to get she has to eat that piece first. She will stick her little paw out and play with it until she gets that piece out from under wherever it is hiding Its almost like she is ocd about it or something......Too Cute |
Sounds about right! Peanut is crazy about his toys... We don't really play fetch, we play daddy or mommy finally gets the toy and Peanut grabs it and runs around the house and tries to not let us get it... There is absolutely no bring it back to me... hahaha |
I am so glad to read about the food thing. Addie does the same thing, she takes a bite and runs away to chew it. Today is only day 10 for us to have her in our family so I assumed it was what she did to eat when she was at her breeders. There were alot of Yorkies and I assumed that was how she was able to get food, that is so funny and comforting. Addie is possesive over the toys (although she thinks my whole house is a chew toy, we are having trouble with that) but I must be behind on throwing a ball. I need to try that now. What size ball do you use, I would imagine a tennis ball being too big...I am new again, so I don't know too much, sorry for any stupid questions...She is 13 weeks this week. Like a new mom, I hope I am not behind on teaching her things. |

Chewy does something similiar when we get home. He hops up and down at the baby gate, I put the gate down and he goes crazy. He then runs to his Dad who's still by the door, but he only gets about halfway. He turns back and runs back to me! What can I say, he's a momma's boy!:D :D |

1 Attachment(s) Teddy does the fetch thing, except he will bring it back and look up at me, then when I try to grab it he gets it in his mouth and moves a few inches out of my reach and drops it again looking at me like "C'mon are we gonna play or not?" Then it becomes tug of war/fetch. He also won't eat out of his food dish if he thinks its dirty, he eats kibble mixed with canned food, so if any of the gravy from the canned food is on the side of the dish he won't touch it. I have to wipe the sides when I'm done mixing it. He also feels the need to "kill" every empty water bottle he sees for some reason:confused: Here's a visual |
