Barking.. recently Bentley has been barking at new people. a few days ago we took him out to go potty and a the neighbors were across the street. Bentley ran to the edge of the yard and barked frantically at them until I grabbed him. then this morning I took him on a walk. while on the walk he barked at two ladies walking, a man in his garage, and a man doing yardwork. these were the only people outside otherwise I think he would have barked at more people. any ideas on to why this sudden change in behavior has occured? -Brett |
At age 2 my Chanel changed from a non barker to a barker... but her change involve only people who come to the door - I think your baby is in protective mode and discovered he's the boss of the hood like my girls think they are - I don't really know how to stop it cause Chanel STILL barks her butt off when the doorbell rings.... I would suggest keep walking him and if you can have people come up and make friends with him so he knows they're no threat - then maybe he'll ease up on barking at the world ? They think they're so tough ! |
Maggie too has taken on the role of "Miss Billy Bob Bad Butt". She barks at a leaf falling. I have noticed too, that if anything is out of place or has just changed a little, it will get the royal bark treatment. I tell her, "that's enough" and try to change her thought to something else. But as we all know Yorkies, that is hard to do. Once they set their minds, it is there like concrete. |
I am not sure if you are all happy with the barking and want to curb the barking but...we just finished a class at petsmart and when some of the dogs would get roudy and start barking constantly the trainer would spray bitter apple on her finger and then put it on the dogs tongue. It seemed to work, she only did it twice then just showed them the bottle and they would stop immediately. Lexi never had it done to her, but it seemed to work on the other dogs. The trainer allowed three barks and then the dogs needed to stop or got the bitter apple. Just telling you what I observed, I have never done it to lexi bc she doesn't bark. GOOD LUCK. |
I really don't know what to tell you. My Chachi is the biggest barker. He barks at everyone. We tell him no bark and it helps a little. He acts like he is a much bigger dog than what he is. |

Barking This sounds dumb but I saw a lady at the dogwalk park whisper to her dog every time he barked "no barking" so I tried it my yorkies. I have them get on my lap and I whisper remind them no barking and if they stop for just a second or so, I tell them good dog and give a treat. It worked except for when they hear someone come up to the door or unless the vacuum cleaner is on. I haven't given up on them, though. |
thanks for the replies!! |
Very intersting. I really don't want Keeley to be to much of a barker. I think it is normal and he needs to be able to bark sometimes. But I am going to have to use the bitter apple trick if it ever gets out of control. He really hates that stuff. As of right now he only barks when he plays and when he isn't sure about something (like my brush, new toys and my bright pink towel). Not to mention that he has such a cute little bark, it makes me laugh everytime I hear it. :D |
