How to tell if my Yorkie Puppy is a miniature or standard
 

Hello, I am new here. My puppy was born on APR 06 2007. Per the last VET visit she is now 3.4 LBS When I was at the breeder this past June to choose my puppy, I saw both parents in the premices. The breeder claims that the litter plus the parents are all miniature. I am new with Yorkies and I never had one before, I just love this particular breed, and this is why I purchased mine. Can anyone tell me if Duchess is a true miniature or standard ? Is there PROS & CONS between standard and miniature ? I received AKC papers and a VET health boocklet of booster shots when I picked up Duchess, but I did not get any contract nor receipt from the breeder, just the AKC papers. Also I took Duchess to the VET for the continuation of the booster shots, and the Doctor said to go back next year, and that the puppy is very healthy.

There is no such thing as miniature or standard. Anything up to 7lbs. is considered to breed standard. Here is the link to AKC guidelines

You have come to the right place for help. There is no such thing as a miniature or tea cup or any other version of yorkie. The standard for the breed is under 7lbs that means that even a 2lb dog is standard, but not as common. There are bigger yorkies too, but they are still yorkies. Your baby is probably all yorkie, it sounds like your breeder is misleading people in order to sell pups. The size of the parents should give you a close asumption of what size your baby will be but this doesn't always hold true. Good luck and enjoy him/her.

According to the growth chart, your puppy's adult weight is estimated to be around 4.5-5 lbs. I think that pretty standard. There are definitely some tiny ones out there. Our Lulu is about 1.10 oz at 5 months, and I every now and then, I wish she was a bit bigger. She's very healthy, but we are always concerned that we will step on her, and we have to constantly watch our steps.

There aren't different sizes of yorkies like there are with poodles and schnauzers (Mini & Standard Schnauzer, Toy, Mini, Standard Poodle). A Yorkshire Terrier is just a Yorkshire Terrier - one size. A Yorkie is a toy breed, and the standard says that they can be up to 7lbs (so anything from 1lb-7lbs), although there are a lot of yorkies that grow to be larger than the standard which just means they are too big to be shown and bred. A lot of people think that there are "teacups" out there, but there is no such thing. Backyard breeders made up this term to make more money. There are some tiny yorkies out there but they are not "teacups" - there is no breed that can be registered as a "teacup".

This is really a very good Chat forum dedicated to Yorkies, and all of you are very helpful, I thank you all. I am in Fairfax VA near the Nation's Capital, and I had to drive 4 hours one way, to go and purchase what I was seeking, a female AKC "Tea Cup" and so I went to the internet and I was looking at all the Virginia all counties and cities and found one in Castlewood VA 17 miles from NC and 30 miles from Kentucky. The breeder assured me that it is a "Tiny" a "TeaCup" I paid $1100.00 I received the AKC plus VET papers, no complains about these two items, but now I am looking at Duchess and although I am VERY attached to her and love her, I see that her size doubled! She is very healthy and very happy, but I was not expecting for her to grow so fast, she was born on APR 06 2007. I now feel I was taken for a ride about this business of TeaCup, and so my question to the group is:
Should I complain to the Breeder? (but I still want to keep Duchess) Should I complain to the AKC? (I already received the papers from the AKC) This is my very first dog, sorry I am new at this. The reason I drove so far, is because in the Washington Post the TeaCup cost about $1700.00 and so I thought I was getting a good bargain going to visit parts of my state that I have never been plus getting a puppy, plus JUNE was a good driving in the mountains. I am confused!
