Behavior problem with Jack I know puppies are supposed to chew a lot because they're teething, but Jack just will not give my fingers and toes or anyone else's a break. Whenever someone new comes to the house he immediately runs to them and starts chewing on their feet, if they pick him up, he chews on their fingers. He also tries to chew on my fingers and toes all day long. He has plenty of toys and bones, and I walk him for about 10 minutes 3 times a day and play with him constantly, so it's not like he's bored and doesn't get enough exercise or attention. I've tried telling him NO sternly, I've tried spraying bitter apple on my fingers and toes, but he doesn't care. I've tried holding him on his back. Whenever we play fetch, somehow he has gotten the idea that the object of the game is to bring the toy back, drop it in front of me and attack my hand viciously. I know that he is just playing, but it hurts! I have tried giving him toys when he chews fingers and toes, and he will play iwth them for about 10 seconds, then return to fingers and toes. Does anyone have any advice for how I can get Jack to stop this? |
How old is Jack? Molly is 5 mos and really biting now too. I've been told it's a stage, to be consistent with discipline and this too shall pass. I hope so!! Carla |
He is only 9 weeks. I just brought him home last week but my fingers and toes have not gotten a break since then haha. What specifically do you mean by discipline? I have tried to discipline him but it doesn't seem to be working. |
Hi there! I had much the same problem with Chloey! At first I didn't really do much because it didn't hurt but when her little teeth started poking through it became a bit of a problem! Eventually i just decided to try holding her mouth shut with one finger one each side of her mouth (one on top, one on the bottom) every time she went for fingers/toes. After about a week of doing it every time she finally decided it wasn't worth it and stopped completely! One piece of advice if you decide to do that though; don't do it with your whole hand as you can easily cover their nose! I was always very careful with this! Good luck! :) |
When Chachi was chewing like that we would spray bitter apple on our hands and feet. After a while he quit doing it because he thought they were going to taste bad |
I've had different things suggested, all while repeating "No bite" or something similar: - Redirection. That didn't work well with Molly. - Placing your finger sideways all the way back in their mouth. This has slowed her down some. - Holding her mouth closed with my fingers. - Pinning her on her back in a little "time out" when it gets to rough. This has had the most effect so far. Thanks guys! I'm gonig to try holding his mouth shut with two fingers. Hopefully this will give my battered fingers and toes and chance to recover. haha |

It's a stage, it will get better. We used bitter apple on our hands too (and everything else she attacked, like the comb:rolleyes: ) and it worked great. Good luck and hang in there!! |
what about wearing shoes around her for a while (i know it's not easy I hardly wear shoes) and putting her down or turning your back to her when she bites your hands. |
