Help! hair loss! My Tobey is 8 months old and I just have noticed in the past few days that his hair on his belly is starting to thin out really bad. its really short and fuzzy in places now- not totally bald though and is starting to move up his sides! what could cause this? He was eating Merrick's puppy plate, but we recently (within the past week) switched him to Royal Canin food for toy breeds because the only place that sells specialty foods is far from us and he also made a mess with his Merricks- picking out all the vege bits and not eating the kibbles well. The royal canin ingredients looked good, but maybe i have made the wrong choice? Could changing his food be causing this? I am worried about my little guy! please help! |
Mites One suggestion is to have the vet check for: 1. Mites (skin scraping) 2. Thyroid condition which causes the hair to thin Good luck and I would definitely have the vet check out the reason. Warmly, Deborah |
Have you changed shampoos, or your grooming methods? I recommend Mane & Tail shampoo for thickening hair. It's cheap, and works great. |
Thanks for the responses- I haven't changed anything except his food recently. I've been using the same shampoo since we got him at 8 weeks. I trimmed his fur around his head and back last week about a 1/2 inch with scissors, but i doubt that would have had any effect on him because I do that about once every 2 months. As far as mites go, would I see other signs of mites? might it be allergies to something in the Royal canin food that wasn't in the merrick's? He doesn't really seem any different, it's just something I have noticed. Anyway, any more opinions would be really appreciated since i can't contact the vet today. Thanks everyone, it is so nice to have a source for information and not just about dogs in general, but about our special babies! :yorkiesar |

good luck! |
I feed Royal Canin for a few months but switched because I felt like Magic & Sailor were too "itchy". My vet says sometimes the chicken products can cause the "itchies'. (I have switched foods a couple of times and am currently feeding Natural Balance Sweet Potatoe & Fish.) Recently Sailor has gotten worse again - to the point of losing patches of hair at a time. Our vet has given her shots the last 2 months but will be trying to move her to some pills instead....and if she continues we will do the allergy testing. Sailor's problem does seem to be seasonal and not food related.....but this year between 2 straight months of ran and now extreme heat for several weeks she seems worse. So be sure to check with your vet is you notice alot of scratching....so "hot spots" do not develop. (Last Friday Sailor had a place start on her side that could have devloped into one - luckly her shot helped her for now.) |
