When did you first fall for a yorkie?

Hey everyone! I thought it would be neat finding out when YT people first fell in love with yorkies. I saw my first 'live yorkie' when I was 40! Actually, it was 2 yorkies in a basket at college (my first year!). I went over and started talking to their mommy and daddy and met Adam and Eve (funny, I remember the names of the yorkies ;) ). I immediately fell in love and found a yorkie of my own within the year. I have loved them ever since, and although I love all doggies, yorkies have a very special place in my heart that no other breed can fill! :aimeeyork

My HUSBAND talked me into getting a yorkie!

My uncle Terry has had a yorkie (12 pounds!) for about 8 years. But during that time, I had never had a dog before, nor was I at a place to get a dog, so I never really thought much about him. And his dog licks to the point of annoyance...so like I said, I passed the thought over.

My husband had a wire-haired terrier since he was 8, and it died a couple years before I met him. Anyway, he looooved that dog and always wanted another terrier. Once Eli and I got married, Eli met my uncle Terry's yorkie, Didas (short for Addidas), and my husband fell in love. :luvu:

When we 1st started talking about getting a dog (March of 04) we considered all breeds, especially maltese and yorkies....but my husband got his way after begging and begging for a yorkie and I gave in!

Now we're both so sold-out for yorkies we can NEVER go back!

And my husband is already on the campaign trail for ANOTHER! Isn't that cute?!

P.s. My husband wrote me a cute love note this afternoon....(we've been married nearly 16 months) and the note said "I look forward to our future, with yorkies and children (in that order) and a house of our own! You are my girl and I need and love you forever!"

My heart melted.

Well, I alway thought they were sooo adorable in like dog shows and stuff! And then there was a picture of one in a magazine a few years ago. So I started doing my research because I had always wanted a smaller dog. I just fell in love with the breed. Too bad it took me several years to convince my family to get one! LOL!

(I know, lame story, but it's the truth)

In love with yorkies

I looked up toy breeds on the web over a year ago and yorkies met the requirements I wanted, smart, cute, small, no yukky dog hair everywhere. I got one, then like potato chips, had to have another.

red98vett 06-17-2005 04:18 PM

I was lucky to babysit a co-workers totally adorable yorkie ...and fell head over heals in love - - because my hubby already had 3 cockers and we got one together ....I waited three long years before finding Chanel, then we got Cheri a year ago.

LIL MIS' MAGIC 06-17-2005 05:08 PM

I first found out about Yorkies through my aunt who had breed her Yorkie and had offered me one as a gift...at first I wasn't so sure, but after I saw the puppies for the first time, I knew I had to have one...soon after I had to have another one, in order to have a playmate...now I am totally in love with the breed and can't imagine having anything else!!!

teri88 06-17-2005 05:15 PM

I really knew nothing about Yorkies. We were getting my daughter a puppy and I was looking at a cocker spaniel. I turned around and my husband was holding a yorkie. He said "I want this one". I held him and he put his two paws on my chest and licked my chin. That was it....I was in love!

I don't even know when I (we ;) ) fell in love with Yorkies.

But somewhere along the lines we just knew that we wanted one, no questions asked! :D

When my parents got divorced (I was 9), my aunt bought my mom a yorkie to help us through the hard times to comfort us, for us to spoil, and so that our maltese had a friend to play with. We, including our maltese, fell in love with her immediately! She brought so much joy to our lives that I knew from that point on, I would always have yorkies. Now my husband and I have Miko (our own yorkie), and we can't imagine life without him!

natalie 06-17-2005 05:46 PM

I remember first seeing a Yorkie when I was about 18 years old. I was like "good lord, that dog is SOOO cute!" and I found out they were kind of pricey so I never thought about getting myself one.
Then, about 2 years later, my friends and I took a trip to Houston, Texas where my girl friend lives and she recently bought a Yorkie. We stayed with her so I had time to play with her dog and I thought he was the most adorable thing ever! I asked her how much she got Bingo (her Yorkie) for and she said she found a breeder who was selling him for $500.00!
After that, I went on my search for Yorkies. It took me about 3-4 months before I found the perfect breeder!

Mydogkelsey 06-17-2005 05:59 PM

When I was a teenager like 12 or so reading a teen magazine In one of the articles it had a girl with some yorkie puppies. I fell in love! Now I'm 20 almost 21, and absolutly love my Kelsey :D

My sister had a Yorkie and we Yorkiesit him for a couple of months. We just fell in love over heels with my sis's Yorkie. After that we wanted our own. It took us a while but finally last year we were able to get our own Baby. We love her so much. She is one of the family. ;)

Ilovebaby 06-17-2005 07:29 PM

OH man.. I wish I could remember when it happened??? I can remember searching every day trying to find that perfect puppy..but i can't remember when or how it all began. No one I know has one. I guess it was just meant to be for me...lol....man I must be getting odl..I am losing my memory at 20!!!!!! ugh!

15 years ago My ex had given me my first Yorkie as an Easter present and I fell in love with him the moment I seen him. He passed away 3 years later of intestinal bleeding after one of my daughters friends slammed him in the bedroom door.

SissaYSU 06-17-2005 08:16 PM

We got our first Yorkie about a little over six years ago and I fell in love with him the minute I picked him up out of his cage and held him...you look into their big brown eyes and melt :D It was funny because my mom never EVER wanted a dog...and guess who is my mom's little shadow? Guess who my mom calls "baby doll" and "sweetie" and spoils him rotten? Guess who wanted the second dog and pushed everyone for a second yorkie? Yup...my mom :p Now we have two beautiful yorkies...Tyke a seven year old and Bubba a five month old :D

Fell in love with yorkies 20 years ago, when I got my first one Max. He had a great life for 17 years. He passed away two years ago in Feb. His sister Lucky 15 year old chow-mix, was lost with out him, so I got Maddie, then came Rudy and now Polly. Lucky is now surrounded by yorkies and loves them to death, they keep her young.

I saw my first yorkie on TV in the early 80's and I was from western Kansas so never dreamed of actually owning one. We moved to Northern California and I was still dreaming of a yorkie and occasionally would see some in our local paper for $300. (which was a huge price then.)

We had never bought a dog ( always had free puppies given to us ) and my husband couldn't imagine spending that much!! So I started to beg..... :D

I first found a poster from my kids book club and had it on our bedroom wall, had pictures on the fridge, keyrings with yorkies...etc. I started reading up on the breed and decided I wanted to be a breeder. I guess that justified ( for my husband ) spending the money so we got Sadie who had a horrible disposition but LOVED my husband which worked... ;) ) and then the male we got was way to big for Sadie ( but LOVED me ) ...so decided I didn't have the best "specimans" of the breed so gave up on the breeding but I HAD MY YORKIES!!!! :D

Mya's_Mom 06-17-2005 11:18 PM

I remember seeing Joan River's Yorkie "Spike" He was so quiet and well behaved. I used to like to see her on shows just to see the dog.
When I was a teen my girlfriend had a pair of yorkies that were adorable.
Four years ago my neighbour across the street got a Yorkie "Quincy" that was too adorable for words and the greatest personality. When they moved I actually missed seeing the lil guy. In my mind I knew the next dog that I would get would be a yorkie but I also looked at Chihuahuas and Mini Pins. My husband was leaning more towards a Mini Pin because he thought a Yorkie was too fragile. After we looked a couple of Mini Pins we thought they were too hyper. I put yorkie wall paper on our computer, e-mailed my husband yorkie pics....printed out names of breeders....took him to pet store to just hold a yorkie....that was it. hahahah We then found our Yorkie through an ad posted on line and bought her the next day. Everyday my husband tells me that I made the right choice in dogs. Heck, even he is talking about our NEXT yorkie !!!!

My Yorkie Story

I don't ever remember a time in my life when I didn't love/want Yorkies.

I remember as a young kid, maybe junior high age, walking to school with my friend and saying that when I got older I was going to own a Triumph convertable (two seats) and a Yorkie! (Coming from a family of 8 children the very thought of a vehicle which only seated two was AMAZING!)

I suppose I had read about Yorkies in a book somewhere/sometime, and that was the start of the fascination.

Fast forward LOTS of years...and a number of family dogs. I had a dog with whom I had absolutely fallen in LOVE (my Choochie...best dog that ever was). When I had to put him down, at the age of 17 after a very good life, I was devastated...went through one of those "NEVER AGAIN! I am never again going to have something that I love that much, because it hurts too much when you lose them!"

Well, within a couple of months I was SOOOOOO wanting a dog (in addition to my Chelsea, given to me by my brother when his new wife decided she wanted some other kind of dog...What can I say, too many men in my life are just totally whipped by their women! :p ). I decided if I was ever going to do it, now was the time. I could choose to have the dog I had always wanted/dreamed of. I went off to the regional kennel club show, and got a couple of recommendations regarding Yorkie breeder. In fact, when I first met Connie at the show, Maggie had just been born (about a week earlier).

I got the Mag-ster 4 years ago this fall...and then added to the group this year with Molly (Maggie's second cousin, actually...from the same breeder) in April. MacKenzie came to us just a week ago after being rejected by her supposed to be mother, the wife of a friend of mine.

So, I'm one of those who owns them with never having met one of them. The best part is even after nearly four years of ownership, they make me laugh every day! And I can't think of anything else in my life that I can say that about!

I just wanted a small rescue to complete our corgi, chihuahua family when I saw Duncan or Benji as he was then called I fell in love with him despite his matts and tangles and the awful smell  Took him home cleaned him up and was even more in love with him when he smelt nice

louisvsmom 06-18-2005 05:01 AM

I first fell in love with yorkies when i went to buy my house 5 years ago. The realtor had the tiniest yorkie 3 pds! adult size. I just had to have one. I waited awhile though to find the perfect one and to convince my husband to allow me to get one. Finally got my louis in october of 2004!!! went to wizard of claws in hollywood florida and saw a bunch but when they brought louis out it was love at first sight!!! Bought him a ton of clothes and spoiled him ever since.

They are the most cuddly affectionate dogs !!!

When we first got married and moved into our new home, my hubby worked afternoon and didn't get home until 5:30 in the morning so I was all alone at night. We looked at breeds that wouldn't be too large. My husband always like bulldogs, but I didn't like the slobber, so we went to see pugs. (kind of like a bulldog?) But they didn't steal my heart and they shed like crazy, I really didn't want that. So in the paper the next morning there was an ad for a yorkie, male, for $300, back in 1976 that was a lot of $$$. She was a real nice breeder, very caring and informative. Asked me if I had children, said she wouldn't have sold him to me if I did. I think because we were kind of young ourselves and she was afraid that he wouldn't get the attention he deserved. But we went to see him, well, that was it. We bought Charly home and I have been with a yorkie ever since  ...

I am just like Jwash. Now that I'm retired I wanted an inside dog to cuddle with, but not shed. Every dog I have ever owned and loved, would shed like crazy. Even my Himalayan Cat, which passed away in March of the year, was one of the BIGGEST SHEDDERS. His hair would actually fluff through the air, like feathers. Other than these Yorkie babies being such picky eaters, and the terrible fear of predator birds getting them, they are the perfect breed to have.

Didyou ever get the Triumph ?? :)

chewysmom 06-18-2005 08:34 AM

It was very recently. last year there was a PETCO (i think) commercial on tv with the tag line. Dogs rule or we love dogs and right at teh beginning was a yorkie with a puppy cut and he was so cute. I told my husband that if we were to ever get a 2nd dog I'd like to consider a yorkie. Well a few months later I lost my beloved pug, Pike, and my husband got me Chewy for Mother's Day.

I wanted a yorkie after seeing people walking their yorkies. I didn't know very much about the breed so I did some research. This February my husband said find a breeder so I found a local breeder. We got Chachi then 1 month later Jewels.
