I need some advice on our puppy As some of you know we got a new male puppy a few weeks ago and he is doing wonderful as far as playing and doing well with the kids. My problem is, at times he seems like he would be really agressive, for instance, my dad was playing with him and "wooling" him, which he was coming back for more, but while he was "playing" he was also growling and it just sounded really fierce and not like play growling. It was like he was really mad. Then yesterday he had went out to potty and got some poop stuck on his hiney in his fur, so I had to bring him in and wash his butt and when I would take ahold of his tail to lift it up to wash under it, he turned around to me and growled sortof and snapped at my hand. I really do not want this to be a problem and he is only 11 weeks old. So I guess what I am asking is, is this something to be worried about or what do I need to do to correct it before it gets out of control?? He has never acted this way any other time. He gets along with Ciera (when she will let him..LOL) and he has never snapped at the kids or anything or even barked at anyone strange for that matter. So I am confused  |
my 3 month old puppy JUST started to do that too. but from all the threads that i've read about this problem, they said that its just a phase and he'll get over it. but i feel your pain :) |
When he growls like that flip him over on his back and hold him like that until he is submissive and tell him no |
Its important to understand the difference between play growling and real aggression, puppies often growl when they play and its just a way of saying that they are enjoying it. However when/if you really think he's being agressive just stop what you are doing, pick him up and remove him from the room, only for a minute or 2 but enough time so that he realises that when he behaves that way, he gets no attention. |
It's hard to tell the difference between the growling, so you have to also watch if he/she is acting aggressive. If they are nip it in the bud, with a time out. |
This just happened to me today and it freaked me out. I told her no on something and she looked at me and growled and started barking. She reminded me of a 2 year old. I picked her up and put her outside my room and shut the door. I could see her under the door trying to look for me and I waited a few minutes until all was quiet and then let her back in. We went through 2 rounds of this and now she is all calm and laying next to me. I wasn't sure what to do. Hopefully I did the right thing. |
