Health Guarantees I had contacted a breeder I found off of a listing online, and when I asked her if she offered health guarantees on her puppies, she snapped at me and said that it's impossible to guarantee the health of a puppy. I then explained to her that other breeders I've checked out have offered 1, 2 or 5 year guarantees which replaces a pup if it dies from genetic health problems. The lady was like "can you guarantee your own health? it's impossible!" and then she went on to tell me that reputable breeders would never offer health guarantees and that the breeders who offer them are scams. That being said, what is everybody's thoughts on health guarantees? |
Here is my thought on that particular breeder...RUN, run fast and do not look back  |
they are only as good as the breeder that signs them. i hope you told her goodbye. |

Every reputable breeder I know of offers some kind of health guarantee at least for the first year of the pup's life that covers any genetic defects. If the pup should die, an autopsy would need to confirm a genetic problem. Of course, no one can guarantee the pup isn't going to get naturally sick and/or die and the health guarantees I've seen don't cover anything other than genetic and/or congenital defects that are life threatening such as liver shunt. |
Most of the seasoned breeders in my town do not offer contracts. However, these breeders also will stick to their word and then some when it comes to health and such. Two in particular will take a pup back at anytime...even if the owners decide it's just too much work or they simply do not want them anymore...with a full refund. |
I'd run away. I'd feel very uncomfortable with someone who went off on me. What's she going to be like if you have questions? |

I wouldn't want to buy a pup from someone like that. No way! She went off on you when you asked a legitimate question. A reputable breeder encourages people to ask questions. |
Sounds to me like you need to keep searching until you find a reputable breeder...cause she ain't one.;) |
I had someone talk to me a similar way...I did run. Mine offers guarentee. I followed a site I found from the AKC of how to weed out breeders. Well I didnt have much choice...slim pickens around here, luckily a couple hours away one fit all the points. I honestly dont remember that site. |
I got a health guarantee with both my yorkie, the first was not worth the paper it was written on, the second gurarantees basic stuff, most of them will want the yorkie back and after 9mos of having him or her thats impossible anyway. by that time they have already worm themselves into your heart. |
That's exactly what I did...I couldn't wait to get off the phone with her  Quote:

I totally agree with diva pup Quote:

Oh no, sorry to hear about that! What happened exactly? Quote:

There are breeders that will keep their word, help with vet bills, etc. Get references from people they have sold to. Run as fast as you can from this breeder. |
