Oh, that's so scary. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. |
I had a choking scare earier this month too....but I DID do the Heimlich b/c Max was becoming clonic and I was all alone. I didn't even know WHAT it was that he had; I had just given him some of his dry food ("snacks") and walked down to the corner to pick up the mail and when I came in the front door, he was choking and almost seizuring. It was so scary, knowing that I had nobody to drive or call the vet or anything and all I could think of to do was be as gentle as I could and try the basic cpr stuff you do....I swiped his mouth and in doing so, I think I pushed whatever it was down far enough that he could get it down (NOT my intention, but it thankfully did the trick). It doesn't really matter if it's one or 20; all it takes is one for them to get stuck in their little esophaguses:( . Max was basically ok after that, but during the night, he vomited, which I had expected him to do hours earlier, but.....he's ok now. It's really frightening though. I'm so glad that Sugar is ok too! It's like we can never be too careful! I did, however, print out the yorkie cpr and heimlich instructions though! |

I always thought I handled stress well- I have a 12 yr. old daughter and we've had our share of accidents including a mild concussion and I always felt like I kind of went into an almost zen mode. Stay calm and handle the situation- freak later when it's taken care of. Well boy did I drop the ball with Sugar. Thank God my husband was there. |
That is so scary. I use Revolution which is a topical heartworm and flea control. I also stopped giving them any kind of bones or chews. I am glad there was a happy ending. |

My vet told my to crumble it up and mix it in with his food (if I wanted, of course) I never did...I just broke it into tiny crumbles and hand-fed it to Uno. I know what you mean about being scared....Whenever Uno coughs, sneezes, snorts I always get a lil' nervous then I have to convince myself he's fine. I have only had him nearly a month, and he hasn't slept with me in my bed yet, but I wake up in the middle of the night just THINKING he's there and I panic thinking i've smothered him. Yeah, i'm a nutcase. |
Oh Nikki, I'm so sorry. I would have absolutely panicked too. I'm so glad everyone is ok and this is a really good warning for all of us~ |
That's soooooooooo scary! I will definitely make sure I cut Jake's up in even smaller pieces than I already do. I'm glad Sugar is okay! |
I really want to thank all of y'all for not making me feel bad. I thought I might get a few responses about my irresponsibility as a dog owner for not knowing what to do or how I panicked. Y'all are the best! :yorkietal |
i dont think it anyones fault at all when something like that happens. i think that most of us on yt love our dogs and try to keep them as safe as possable. when something like that happens it really makes ya realize just how much they mean to us. |
Glad your baby is okay. We always break everything up in very small pieces. ONe day when DH came home at lunch he found Hallee laying in her crate, feet straight out, and grasping for air. She was choking on something. The night before she had chewed up a pee pad and ate some of it, but was fine all night. There was nothing in her cage but her food in little pieces. The only conclusion we could come up with was maybe she was trying to throw up some of the pee pad and it was lodged. DH grabbed her and put his finger down her throat. He dislodged something. At that time, I just got home, grabbed her and off to the vet we went. It scared us to death. We are paranoid about everything. |
Oh, there is also a pill you can get in replace of heartguard. I get it from the vet. Our Gracie will not eat the heartguard. We have tried everything, to cutting it in tiny pieces and mixing it with cottage cheese. She just picks the cottage cheese out. She is very picky this one. Hallee on the other hand will eat anything so we have never had a problem with the regular heartguard. We give them both a pill now crushed in carrot baby food. |
