switching sleeping arrangments My puppy is 22 weeks old and she has pretty much slept with me from day one, but now I need to transition her to sleep in her crate. Does anyone have any helpful hints or pointers? Thanks! |
The best thing I can suggest is just to bite the bullet and do it cold turkey. Put her in the crate at night, and don't go to her when she cries. She'll probably cry pretty much all night for the first three nights. If you don't go to her, it will end eventually. If you do, it will prolong it; if you go to her in the night, it will teach her that her cries work to get her out. So grin and bear it. Also, during the day, leave the crate door open so she can go into the crate if she wants to during the day. You will probably find that she finds the crate a very comforting place. I have to actually shut the crate door during the day to keep Chloe from "holing up in her room" as I call it. She likes her crate and likes to spend time in her little "den". |
Are you going to keep the crate in your room with you ar are you going to keep it in a different area? If you keep it in the same room, it might be better to transition her. My mom did it this way with both of her girls and they like their crate, I plan on using a crate for Jeter when I get him and I will keep him in my room with me so he is less scared. |
Well I have never done it in that order. Mine always start out in a crate and then graduate to my bed. Put a real nice treat in her crate every night, it has to be one she really loves. I did this with mine and they learned to love the crate because they knew they got a treat everytime they went in. For the first couple of nights I would try playing some soft music to help relieve her stress and cover the crate, it gives it more of a den feel to them. |
I would suggest putting the crate next to your bed first so that she still feels that she is with you, you could even make it higher by putting it on something so that she's right next to you. When she cries poke your finger in to her just to give her some comfort. Then after a maybe a week once she is feeling ok with it then you can gradually start move it elsewhere bit by bit if you want. |
