First time Yorkie Owner - Potty Training I have a 6 month old Yorkie girl, and I am having no such luck with potty training her. Her breeder started the litter on potty pads and has no carpet in her house, we have carpet in every room. I am thinking that my puppy thinks the carpets are her potty pads. I have her in a pupply play pin when I'm not home and she uses her pad pretty well in there, when I get home, I open her pin so she can go back in there to use her pad and or get her food and water. I"m not sure what to do, but she is ruining our carpets and we rent an apartment. If I can not potty train her before we move, in the next 4 weeks, we have to get rid of her. Can someone please help??? |
I need help too I just got Addie yesterday and am a new Yorkie/dog owner. I am curious as a friend gave me a crate and we used it last night but she did poop in it, which I was told she would not do. I don't know what to do, we take her outside constantly. I know this is only day 2, but I am so glad there is this sight for wisdom. Blessings, Vickie |
We used treats such as pieces of carrot or cereal as a treat when our puppies did go outside or on the potty pad. As for the crate, I was told by the vet to reduce the space they have in the crate. If they have alot of room when you are potty training, they will use one side for a bathroom and the other to sleep on. I only had to do this during potty training. Now they have the whole crate and never have an accident. If I leave them for more than 1 1/2 hrs, I put them in a bathroom with a pee pad. Good luck with training your little one! |
Welcome to YT both of you!!! Potty training is a long process, but if you want to train your dog to go outside I reccommend taking them out about every 30 mins during the day, and keep them with you at ALL times, this is hard but it will eventually work. I have had Dakota for almost 3 weeks, and shes almost potty trained:). I learned from my first one, and its pretty easy on your second one. Also, reward them by giving a treat and lots and lots of praise. Hope this helps. You can also go to the training section:)! |
I agree that successful potty training is all about watching your pup VERY closely at all times..sounds like hard work i know but worth it in the end!;) taking them outside every 30 mins to an hour is a good idea...take outside after every meal, drink, sleep and play...if they start sniffing round in circles nose to the ground that is a pretty good indication that they are looking for somewhere to go potty..scoop them up quick and get them outside! and if they do it in the right place lots of praise of course. confining them to a small area (crate) when you cannot watch them is a good idea too. you will get there eventually! :) |

Thank you so much for the help. Addie is doing much better now. I put her in the crate about 11 and got up at 4 to take her out and she had no accidents in the crate, we filled it up, thank you for that. We went and bought treats yesterday and we are using them to praise her. I have 4 children that went off to school today, so it will be just me watching her. :eek: She has peed a few times in the house, but thankfully has only pooped outside. She seems to like the walkway though instead of the grass to pee on... has anyone had this experience? My son mowed the lawn just for her and she now at least will walk on the grass for a minute, but she likes to pee on the concrete. Any suggestions? I will say she is so smart though, today is only day 4 for us and she will already run to the front door when she is ready to go in. |
