Clumsy Yorkie Does anyone feel their Yorkie is clumsier then most dogs? Taina is my first dog ever but my husband seems to feel she is very clumsy compared to his other dogs. She seems to run into things but I think it's b/c she's so tiny and runs extremely fast...anyway, just wondering if anyone had similar thoughts... |
when mine gets running she will do that. I read that jsut running around ( not that this is what your YT was doing...mine was) is not healthy because it si mindless acativity adn they can get a "runners high". IT is better to play focused activites..interaction with a toy or being etc... |
At 12 weeks Gizmo was a little clumsy. I think it was just a puppy stage. The older he gets, the more coordinated he becomes. The puppies of other breeds have seemed just as "clumsy" to me. Gizmo actually seems FAR more intelligent than the other breeds I've been around, but I guess I'm biased. :D |

Diane, that is exactly what I am talking about...a walk would be another focused actvity..thinking game. you dont have to take my word for it...I am sure there is information out there... could even say I am wrong of course. I borrowed several books...so I cannot give the names right now, but my vet agreed big time. yes it is hilarious!!!!!!!:D |
Wo do try to make walks "focused activity" with frequent stops, turns, and we're working hard on the acutal "heel" position. The running thing does look pretty mindless, or should I say it looks like they've just lost their mind??? I don't think Coby abuses it too much, but I'll keep an eye to make sure it doesn't become a bad vice of his!! |
I have to watch mine too...he can go "off in to that race circut" out of the blue....gooofy doggy. |
Those are called the zoomies around here. Someone described them as "a rabbit on crack". lol It is very normal Yorkie behavior. Do a search for "zoomies". I think you'll be surprised. I do not believe it's a "bad habit"or anything. It's just a part of who they are. :) |

I wish I could take credit for it, but I think AlaskaYorkie (?) is the one who coined that phrase. But it stuck with me because it's so true! lol |
Piper & Penny run so fast that they fall over their own feet. LOL |

But to comment on this thread, it's bunk. Yorkies, as a breed, are in no way clumsy. Maybe, as Judy says, when they are puppies. Or maybe, as some others said, when they are wound up and racing with abandon at high speed. But clumsy? No way. I marvel at the stop-action pictures I get of Eddie playing with other dogs. He stops on a dime. He rolls. He twists. It's remarkable how he contorts his body and yet keeps his focus on what it is he wants. If I had his athleticism, I'd be an Olympian. Here are a couple pictures that sort of show what I'm talking about. His focus is incredible. And I've seen the same thing out of other Yorkies I've known. |
Wow. Those are great photos! One more question....zoomies are normal right? Not something that should be "discouraged" as a previous post implied? I have no idea how anyone could do anything about Gizmo's zoomies!!?? Much less why I would want to. |
