Please Help - I Don't Know What's Wrong! Hi everyone. I haven't been here in such a long time. I hope you guys and your lovely babies are doing well. I really need some help. I'm freaking out over here. Wednesday , I gave Zoey a bath. She was completely fine before I gave her a bath. No problems what so ever. Well , every since her bath. She's been twitching her ears and shaking her head/body like she's wett! Then she puts her paws over her ears like she's irritated and something is wrong. :( She's been doing this for two days now. With the way that she's shaking herself off as though she's wett , i'm thinking she may have water in her ears. I have no idea if that's the problem but that's my first impression. She hasn't been herself lately. She's been UNPLAYFUL which is very unusual. She's always hopping around somewhere! She's been eatting and drinking though. She doesn't have a foul smell or any discharge coming from her ears. I really need help. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now. I probably won't have the funds for another two weeks and I don't want to wait that long. Any suggestions? If it is water , what do I do? Sorry for the long post. I'm so upset. |
Gosh, I wish I had an answer, poor little thing. My two do that spastic thing right after baths trying to get the clean off, but they quit once they get dirty again. It doesn't take 2 days. I hope she's ok. Could she be alergic to the soap. I know Roxy had an alergic reaction to Advantix K9 the last 2 times I used it. She shook, scratched, rubbed all over the floor, paced, wouldn't eat, was jumpy, didn't sleep - this went on for 2 or 3 days after I put it on her. She also did it with Adams flea spray. I had to rinse her off with warm water, then she was ok. Maybe you could try just a nice warm bath with no soap. I hope she gets feeling better. |
She very well may have water in her ears - if she's doing this often you'll need to get her to the vet - maybe they can work out payments good luck !! I hope she's going to be ok |
RoxyJosMom - Thank you sooo much! As soon as I read your reply , I ran in the bathroom and i'm running Zoey a nice warm bath right now. She may be allergic to the shampoo that I used. It's flea shampoo and I just thought about the fact that after I washed her , she had a red spot on her head! It's gone now but that very well may be the problem. I'm going to rinse her off now and see what happens. I'll come back and update. Vett - If the bath doesn't work , it's more than likely water. Thank you! |
I hope the bath works. If not, I agree with Villette - ask your vet to please let you pay him out. |
she most likely has an ear infection from getting water in her ear. If she's still doing it tomorrow i'd take her to the vet. sorry:( |
As a swim coach, I deal with water in the ears all the time. A tiny drop of alcohol in the ear should help to dry up any water that may remain in her ears, but it won't help if she has an infection. |
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I gave her a nice warm bath and rinsed her off a couple of times. No shampoo. She's nice and fluffy now but she's still doing it! I feel like crying :( |

water in the ears The first time I gave Teddy a bath, he did that for a couple of days and then at his regular vet visit I was told that he had in fact gotten water in his ears and it caused an ear infection. The vet gave me ear drops for him and in five days he was fine again. He didn't mind the drops at all and the improvement was almost instant. Good luck! |
I THINK you can get ear medication at petsmart. I don't know how effective it is but it's better than nothing. Otherwise I would see the vet. |
When it comes to ears Id hate to be guessing as it can be very serious and end up with long term damage if it is infected. I hope everything works out for your baby. |
I had a bulldog that got ear infections frequently after my boyfriend would give him a bath. He would get water in his ears and it would turn into a yeast infection. I would definately take him to the vet for some ear ointment that always cleared it up and gave relief almost immediately. |
Hi guys! I just wanted to tell everyone thank you! I tried the whole alcohol thing and it didn't work. Therefor , i'm going to take her to the vet first thing tomorrow. :( |
Dont you put cotton in ears to bath????? I was told to put cotton in the ears, so it would help with this. I havent seen anyone say this. Does anyone else do that? jg |

I have one quick question... Does anyone know how much the eardrops may be? Zoey is miserable. She won't let me even touch her ears. |

Is this a vet you use often? If it is, then they should be able to work with you. Fingers crossed for you. If they won't work it out, ask if they will hold a post-dated check. Poor baby! And yes, I put cotton balls in Gizzy's ears when I bathe him. Maybe that will help prevent it in the future. Hugs to you both. |

zoey has to get to the vet. sorry it going to be a long night. maybe someone knows here if you can put something warm on them. to may the baby comfortable. start a new thread and ask jg |
An ear infection can be a really painful thing. I had a jack russell that used to get them every so often. he was the most gentle, loving dog in the world; but he had to have a muzzle put on while they checked his ears. It really will respond to the drops you will get though; this is such a common thing that I don't believe it will be too very expensive to treat. His hearing is very important, and the pain relief is priceless. If after they look at him and treat him, the cost is too steep for you to handle all at once; they will have to let you pay it a little at a time. Go for it, he is your baby;) |
I hope he's doing okay..... I know hair does it and I freaked out with the first vet I had but since have learned to keep the hair out and my Peanut is good. To watch you baby not leaving their ears alone can be so heart breaking. Please post how you baby is..... it you can't buy the meds if his ears have an affection I will help! I hope he is okay! |
After the infection in her ears is healed, you should use a drying agent in her ears after every bath. I used Chlorhexiderm Flush by DVM Pharmaceuticals. You can buy it at the vet's if he/she carries it, or you can go to a vet supply website and buy it. After the bath, I'd throw a towel over Hailey while she was still in the sink because she got cold fast, and I'd squirt a little of the Flush in her ear, and then massage the base of her ear for about 10 seconds. Then I'd turn her head sideways for the excess to flow out into the towel, and I'd do the other ear. A vet showed me how to do this many years ago. A dog's ear canal is L-shaped, so you follow the canal down the L to where it turns, and you massage the Flush so it gets into the entire ear. On the bottle it reads: "Topical Antimicrobial Cleansing/drying Solution for use on dogs, cats and horses." This dries any water that remains in the ear, and it feels soothing. You know, my Hailey went to the Bridge on Dec. 23, 2006, and I will not be getting another furbaby for a long time -- due to health, financial and brokenheart issues. I have a brand new bottle of this, with an expiration date of 04/08. If you want it, I'll send it to you. Send me a pm. No sense letting it going to waste. Sandy |
Try putting a few drops of sweet oil in each ear to see if that helps. |
i have 2 other types of dog with down ears they tend to get ear infections more often the drops and ear cleaning meds are cheap also plucking extra ear hair will help prevent this. and when i get done bathing them i take the blow drier and blow it in their ears for a couple of seconds that helps to prevent ear infections. |

Sounds like your baby has an ear infection. Several years ago, Toto was doing the same thing and Patrick kept saying she smelled odd. I found out that the groomer was clipping the ear hair way down in there instead of plucking it. Our vet was furious! The hair was so thick down in there that it stayed constantly wet and she had a really bad infection. That's why, regardless of how scrappy she looks, I groom her myself and take her to my vet for ear plucking, etc. Good luck with your little Zoey and I pray that she will feel better soon. |
I don't know what's wrong Get some ear cleaner put it in her ears massage the base of her ears. Get a Q-tip be very careful not to go too deep clear the ear canal. The put a drying agent in it. If your puppy has not had the hair pulled out of the ear canal you do need to do this. It traps water and can cause yeast. You can also use cotton balls in the ears when you are bathing to insure water does not get inside.;) Another problem could be ear mites. Your Vet. should have medication for this or you order it from Revivial Animal Health. |
