Hello, I am new to this site. I am a certified Vet Assistant but I don't know
too much about yorkies. I will be getting one today however, the vet believes
he is 2-3 years old. He was a stray and had a bad rash they thought on his back. They soon discovered it wasn't a rash but a burn. The burn is consistent with someone pouring acid across his back. He has been at the vets and they've been putting cream on him and his hair is now growing back and they feel he's ready to go to a good home. The just neutered him and got him up to date on all his shots. I haven't seen him yet but they tell me he is 18 lbs and they say he is pure yorkie. I thought yorkies were smaller dogs! Does anyone know if this is a "normal" size for a yorkie? I'm also concerned about housebreaking him, I'm assuming he's not since he was a stray and was just fixed at 2-3 years old. How difficult do you believe it will be to get him potty trained and or to teach him not to mark? I know it's possibel with other breeds but I'm not seeing much hope for yorkies when I look around the internet. Please help!!

Since you don't know everything he has been through, I think he definitely needs a lot of love. With gentle persuasion, he will definitely learn to potty where you want. He will want to please you when he loves you so it will take persistence and gentleness and he will do what you want.

hi there and welcome to YT. That is awesome that you are giving this little guy a chance he might not have had before. Yorkie standard is up to 7 lbs but there are alot of yorkies here that are bigger and we call them teapots here.:) Yorkies are a little hard to potty train anyway but it isnt impossible. If he still marks you can always use a belly band of him. That is what I use on my males. I cant imagine how he got a chemical burn on his back but you never know these days what some people can resort to. Maybe since he was a stray he got into something he shouldnt have looking for food. Poor thing. Anyway I wish you the best and commend you for what you are doing. I can wait to see pictures of your big guy.

Welcome to YT! Congratulations on getting a yorkie!

He sounds like he has been through a lot! Poor little thing. How wonderful that you can give him a home!

As far as size, the standard is up to 7 pounds. However, there have been purebred yorkies that have gotten up to 25 pounds! Oh, well, just more of him to love, right?

As for potty training, with lots of work and diligence you can probably be successful. Consistency is the key.

Please post pictures when you can. We would love to see him!

He can be potty trained, it's just going to take some time. Sounds like he's going to need lots of love. It may take time for him to trust anyone after being abused, but Yorkies have hearts of gold, he will bring you years of happiness.;) There are lots of yorkies out there that are over the standard weight, (they just have lots more love to give):D :D :D I'm sure after you look in his sweet little eyes you will be filled with his "Thank You" for saving me kisses. Crate training will help both with the housebreaking and the houseTRAINING! i.e. Getting him used to normal house life and a family routine.

Give him a chance to observe your home and routine from a "safe place" (his crate) and he will feel more secure.

Obviously don't leave him in there for hours at a time - you'll want to offer him the option to go poddy every hour or so. We find that saying "Good Outside" when they go is a good cue for them becuase later we're able to say "Do you need to go outside?" and they understand what we're asking.

Ohhhh how exciting!!! YES Yorkies get 18 pounds there is just more to love! Sounds like your going to be the proud mommy of a teapot! Bless ur heart for taking him in and he will soon run your life....its so FUN! Glad he is getting the love and home he deserves oh and welcome to YT!

You are an angel for helping that sweetie. Personally, I love the teapots! I hope he heals well. It sounds like you will be a great yorkie mom! :)

Welcome to the site. How nice of you to give him a home, and we have all size yorkies on here. Be patient with his house breaking, and he should be fine. Neutering him should reduce the need to mark. Being he's bigger he should be easier to potty train. The little one's are the buggers.

That's so sad for him. I can't imagine someone pouring acid on him. I can't comprehend. I'm so happy that you are taking him in and will be giving him the good home and love he deserves and has been missing for so long. :)

Bless you for giving this guy a new home. Love, trust and consistency will be the most important things for him.

I am heartbroken to think someone would have treated him so.

I second the idea of crate training him, this will be easiest on you and on him. When he is out of the crate interacting with you, you might want to consider confining the activity to one room initially too - closing a door or using a baby gate. Get an idea if he is housebroken.


As far as his weight, this may be natural for him or he may be overweight. Hard to know without seeing his frame & seeing where he is carrying the weight.The weight can be brought under control if he is in fact overweight, by controlling how much he eats & feeding a human quality dog food.

I have a little experience with this, just wanting to take 2 pounds off a dog I adopted. But others on YT have helped dogs shed much more than that. Just remember it will take time. And keep in mind love does not = food.

Can't wait to learn more about him
