Anyone have a dog who doesn't like to come? Whenever I have been trying to get Teddi lately to put her in the kitchen she runs away because she knows what I am doing. I end up chasing her all around and only by luck do I get her when I corner her! I want her to come when I call her. I tell her to sit and she sits nicely then I tell her to stay but when I start crouching down or walking towards her she darts off in the other direction. Anyone have this problem? Should I use treats to get her to come over each time? I'm not sure what will work. Advice would be appreciated! |
YUP pretty much all of us. LOL these little guys have a mind of their own. :p |
"Come" is a tough one bc you want it to ALWAYS work, for their own safety. So, if I ever need them to "come" when I know it's something they don't like, I do not use come - I just go get them. Wylie doesn't like to be brushed, so I never, ever use "come" for that - bc then he begins to associate "come" w/ the potential for something icky. |
Armani does that too. The funny thing is I think my dad gives him lots of treats and says "Na" its like here but in russian. As soon as I say "NA" he comes running lol |
I struggle with this with Otis but only when he's outside. (when it's MOST important) He's a true terrier! Sometimes he comes right up to the door and stops and looks away. I've resigned to go out and get him when it's time to come in. At least now that he's 3, he doesn't run away from me when I go out and get him. Good Luck!! |

Like everyone else, this has always been tough. My advice from my experience...... Never chase your puppy even in play. It's difficult to explain that "this" time, you're serious. In play, let your puppy chase YOU! That will come in much more handy when you're not playing. I use treats ALL the time for "come" when they're within reach or handy to get. That way, when I use "come" when I don't have treats, he doesn't know that. But 8 times out of 10, he gets a treat for coming - even if it's for doing something wrong! Coby also gets a treat for just "paying attention" to us. If we go to an outside cafe or the pet store, just paying attention to us with all the distractions gets him a treat. Coby does pretty well in the house unless he thinks it's a game (in which case I just get a treat out and he's right there). Working outside is a lot harder, and I haven't even ATTEMPTED without a leash. Someone suggested two leashes tied together or a long retractable locked. I'm going to try that. But "come" is so important, so I just keep working on it........ Also, if you are outside, use the "run away" tactic if your pup gets loose. I had one get out the door once and take off down the street. I paniced and ran after (of course she ran faster). So I made a lot of noise and started running BACK to the house, and lo and behold, she beat me to the door!!! |
I was just complaining about chasing Zoey. She never comes when called. |
OH YES...I remember those days...trying to leave the house, and Chelsea wants to play "tag". I remember chasing her thru the house, around the furniture, up and down the hallway. Now that she is 2.5 yrs old, its a whole lot better. Of course, showing her a treat helps....well, ok, so I am a push over, and she KNOWS how to play her game. She is crate trained, so I just point to her crate and she walks to it...slowly...IF she feels like it...maybe....sometimes.... Her game IS different....now...finally. Be patient, it takes time for US to be trained. :D |
They are stinkers. I have to bribe Lulu with a cookie to get her to come when she is outside running around like a nut and I want to go inside. |
Mine is very good at the come command...mostly because our trainer taught us to teach her to use that command with a positive connotation only... to never ask her to 'come' and make her do anything she doesn't like to do or associate that word with a negative action or behavior. For eg....we'll say Zoe come...she'll come we'll hug and kiss and rub her chest first then we brush her teeth lol or when she comes when asked the first time, we'll praise her with a 'good girl' or 'good come' The most it's taken her is for us to ask her to come twice. Also, when you were teaching the come command, were there treats involved to associate that word with a good thing? |

When I try to get Sweetie to come to me she will get just out of reach and sit down. I point to the floor and say "right here" and she will move forward about an inch!! She will continue to do this until she is within my reach. You would think I beat her or something!!! She will come right to me if I say "Come let me fix your hair". Go figure.... We HAVE trained her to "Stop!" if she is running away and some how I have lost control of her leash. She will stop and lay down - even worked when she started to chase a bunny in the yard. They are such a joy!! I love mine to pieces!!! Cyndi |
