I have always used the retractable leashes and I prefer them over a regular leash. I feel like I have more control because I can adjust the length yet I still have a handle to hold on to. I'm currently watching my brother's boxer and he uses a regular leash and I feel like I have no control with that regular leash. The leash already came flying out of my hand once. The retractable leashes also last pretty long. I still have the original ones. When I do decide to replace them, however, I will replace them with the "all belt" ones rather than the part cord/part belt ones because they are safer. I think it was simonandhallie who mentioned previously that it can get dangerous when you have 2 dogs running and the cords wrap themselves around you. The all belt ones seem to be a bit more expensive but I think that it's worth the price for the extra safety feature. |
I have had no luck with the retractable leashes. I went through two in the first year alone. The first one, Flexi, comfortable handle actually came apart on the handle and opened in two pieces showing the leash roll inside. I took it back and got another. The second one did not last much longer it got jammed so I threw it away and went back to the leash. They are nice but I had no luck with them. Buddy pulls so maybe that had something to do with it I'm not sure. I feel more secure with the solid leash. |
I think these leashes work great. My only problem is that I'm terrified of them. When I was about 9 years old, my neighbors had their dogs on a run outside and my friend and I went to go take her for a walk and put on one of those retractable leashes well my friend was holding it and the dog went nuts and ran behind me legs, the rope from the leash gave me 2nd-3rd degree rope burn on the back of my knees...SO painful, I still get a little queasy when I see them. |
I did not read through all the responses - so I'm not sure if this has been an issue for anyone else. I have the 16 ft. retactable leash - and love it except for................... 1) When Baxter gets excited and starts running about - You have to watch the leash does not wrap around your bare legs -arms - etc. My family is scarred. Me the worse with rope burn - and let me tell you - even though its a very thin leash- it hurts - I have not been able to get a pedicure in about 3 wks - waiting for my last burn to heal - It's a 6 inch long thin burn on my ankle - I may have to get a tattoo there to cover the scar lol. and 2) We've dropped the handle and it chases Baxter - He runs for his life - Pretty funny - but also pretty dangerous - He's scared and running away from something attached to him. |
I have both the mini and classic, and I do definitely like the classic better. I like that it goes the extra 6 feet, but more importantly that I can fit my hand securely in, so I think you've made the right decision. Other than that, I love the leash. It's nice that they can run a bit more on them, and very convenient! Good luck :) |
I had the cord one & i was constantly getting wrapped up in it & getting cord burns on my legs, hands (never grab the cord directly) & arms. So i went hunting & found a brand that is all leash the whole way through, it's a flat leash looking thing instead of the cord & it's a lot less painful. |
We also tied a knot in ours at about 6 feet so if you happen to drop it it won't retract all the way & hit your little one in the butt. It's still a bit scary, but it won't hurt them. |
