Help with poo problem?   My Coco has eaten poo ( hers or Coffee's ?) twice in the last three days!!! Why is she doing this? She is nearly 3yrs old. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |
It's GROSS  but won't hurt your furbaby. Usually they do this for one or a combination of the following reasons: 1. They're missing something in their diet, and eat poo to try and get whatever the missing mineral/vitamin/nutrient is. What kind of food are you feeding? 2. Their food goes through them undigested, so the poo still smells like food to them, so they eat it. (Again, what are you feeding?) 3. They are trying to cover up the fact that they pooped, because they don't want to be scolded for it. If you can figure out the cause, you may be able to remedy it by changing your action or changing their food. A higher quality food might do the trick. Also, you can purchase ForBid from your vet, or Deter from PetSmart-both are vitamins you either sprinkle on their food or give in pill form that will make their poo taste "Bad" to them, and they won't want to eat it anymore. I have also heard that you can sprinkle Meat Tenderizer or MSG on their food to help with this, though I haven't tried it. I have two poop eaters  and the Deter from PetSmart (1/2 tab per day each) will stop the problem temporarily. Usually with poop eaters, you can stop it for awhile, but they will do it again eventually, and you'll have to break the cycle again later on. Just remember that though it's way gross to us, it's not harmful to them. |
Thanks for advice. Here in S.A we don't have a large variety of "good" pet foods. We have a lot of crappy stuff, the only "good" food is Hills, Royal Canin and Eukonuba.:( Mine have been on Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier / Mini Sensible since puppies, as per the breeders and my vets advice. A while back we also had the pet food scare and I did home cooking, which made their poops a little loose, Vet said to put them back on kibble, which I did. (when food was given the ok) My previous two dogs (not Yorkies) had only home cooking and both lived to 18yrs! CoCo may have been trying to hide poop, 'cause I found the deed in the lounge!! She is "Daddy's little girl" and does't like it when he scolds her:) I will have a chat to vet about the Forbid or Deter. Don't know it it's available here. I see there is another thread with the same problem:eek: |

Bummer you can't get better quality foods there, but Royal Canin should be ok. I homecook-and though at first it made looser stools, after a few weeks they're back to normal. I think it's like detoxing them  You might try again-maybe with some brown rice, boiled chicken, and a little raw grated carrot to ease into it. The vet should be familiar with Forbid. Deter I get at Petsmart-but ask your vet about meat tenderizer too, that should do the , and might be more readily available. I too have a Daddy's girl who hates to be scolded! ;) |
Many times, it's because of a vitamin deficiency... |
