1st haircut... Please help! I have a 4-month old boy yorkie, Benji. He needs a haircut and I would love some imput as I am fairly new at this. :) How fast can I expect his hair to grow back in? Do you cut/trim the hair on the ears? Another issue I have is that the hair on his body is somewhat matted. I was away for a couple of weeks (wasn't able to take him with me :( ) and he didn't get proper brushing, which resulted in the matting. I tried brushing it out but the matted parts are close to the skin and it's no use. The ends aren't matted and he looks fine, but when I run my hand through his coat, I can feel little "bumps" in the hair. What do you think if I cut the hair on his body to about 1/2 inch length? Some yorkie owners suggested I use hair clippers for the hair on his body; does anyone have experience with this? I don't plan on letting his hair grow super long either, so I don't mind cutting it off, I just wonder how long will he have to live with the super-short hair look... :( The pic posted is of Benji with combed hair (pre-matting), never cut. :D |
Are you going to cut him yourself or take him to a groomer. If you're taking him to a groomer, I'd tell him/her that you want a "puppy cut". If the mats are close to the skin and won't come out, there will be some spots with a "close shave". But the hair grows pretty quickly and the comfort he feels getting rid of those mats will far outweigh the short time he has short hair. Also, whether you're using a groomer or doing it yourself, since it's his first haircut, it will be a new experience for him. Be prepared for it not to look absolutely perfect, although GOOD professional groomers are amazing with puppies and unruly puppies. Some YT'ers on here get a puppy cut on the body (short) and leave the head long (for more of the traditional yorkie face). Don't worry - whatever you get will grow out fast. The important thing is getting rid of those uncomfortable mats! And the ears should be trimmed up to help keep them erect while he's teething. Good luck and send pics.... |
Hi i know how you feel, im taking molly in on tuesday for her first cut, she is 4 mths and already matted, i have tryed everything even cowboy magic was no help, I dont want to keep pully on her so she will most likly have to be shaved down:( but it will grow back, thats the good thing:) best to you, im nervous to:rolleyes: |
He'll probably have to be shaved down, but they can leave the hair around his face longer. It kind of look cute, and will grow back in no time. |
