Interested In getting a Yorkie I have been seriously considering getting a Yorkie for our family- primarily for my 9 month old daughter. Are Yorkies child-friendly? |

Mine is definately child friendly. She LOVES kids...I wouldn't know about a 9 month old though. |

its obvious she wants the dog to grow up with her 9 month old together. I say go for it. It will be alot of work and yes yorkies are child friendly. Just maybe look into getting a yorkie that will break the 7 pound barrier as some comments are correct about them being fragile and such |
I would wait till your child is older and can understand how to care for a dog. |
My kids are 7 and 10. Good ages for the yorkie we just got 3 months ago. I do daycare, and don't really let the kids with the dog. He loves kids, and is really great with them. However, he is a small dog, and little kids really could stumble and hurt him easily. It would require constant supervision and I would think it would be too stressful. |
I would consider a collie or lab type dog. It is so stressful to allow children and Yorkies together. If the child is taught to respect animals that is great but you can't let the Yorkie and child run around at the same time because the child could fall on accident and then Yorkie is crushed. |
I would wait untill your daughter is older. We waited untill our Daughter was 5 to get yorkies |
I would not get a Yorkie with a 9 month old. There are many threads here where someone's Yorkie has been injured or killed by a young child. I know of at least one where a Yorkie was killed when a toddler who were learning to walk, fell on him and another where a child pushed over a child gate onto a Yorkie and killed him. Not only is having a Yorkie around a young child dangerous for the Yorkie, but imagine how bad your child will feel if she hurts it. |
My husband and I have discussed many different breeds of dogs- large to small and we feel like we would be more comfortable if our daughter was in the same house with a smaller dog because of the biting issue. If we had a medium to large dog and something triggered the dog to bite it would very seriously injure our child. So our thoughts are, if you have a smaller scale dog than the possiblity of the dog biting is still there just not as destructive to our daughter as if she were bit by a smaller dog. |
If you do get a yorkie get one thats going to be on the bigger side. They are sturdier plus My bigger yorkie is better with My daughter than the smaller one |
What your saying makes sense if your not familiar with dogs in general. However, the little ones can be quite nippy only because they are protecting themselves where the larger dog, such as lab, golden retriever etc are quite family orientated and child friendly. Rarely do you read anything about these types of dogs biting children expecially if raised from puppyhood with the child or children. I would most definately get a larger dog as opposed to a toy dog for this age child. Because the child and dog are small does not mean the dog will not bite. Yorkies are BIG dog's in little bodies and can be quite aggressive if treated badly. |
Why do you want a dog now? Why not wait until she is older? You will not be able to get a Yorkie from a reputable breeder with a 9 month old child. If you absolutely must get a Yorkie right now, then I would recommend getting an adult on the larger side. |
If I were you, instead of picking a specific breed, I would rescue an older dog that has had child experience. Take you daughter to shelters or adoption clinics at PetSmart and PetCo and let her interact with the dogs and see which one is best for you all. Yorkie puppies are high maintence when it comes to attention and are a little rambunctious. Being that you daughter is only 9 months, she's pulling at things and a puppy may have the urge to bite no matter what breed. Also, puppies nibble and might scare your daughter. If you get an older one that has been around children, he/she might be able to tolerate some mild baby like things that your daughter will do without getting nippy. |
