HELP - Bath and Grooming!! Hi, can somone please help me, my yorkies, 3 months old, are terrified of bath and grooming, I realy want to do this myself, my husband thinks they are getting abused at the parlours. I bought all the stuff, scissors, combs, everything, I just can't keep them calm, not even with normal brushing. What are the parlours doing to keep them from jumping all over the place?? Please!! Bathing and grooming help I got my dog Pasta used to the blow dryer by having him in the bathroom when I dried my hair and would point the dryer at him once in awhile. After about 2 days he thought it was a game. Now he gets out of bath and just rolss over and over untill he is dry. He loves the blow dryer now. I started bathing him with a little water and would bring toys in for him to get used to water. I even got in with him to keep him calm with my shorts on. He now likes to play in kiddie pools outside and puddles of water. My only problem is brushing him because he will grab the brush and run thinking its a game. I just wait for him to fall asleep. Hope this helps. |
It takes a lot of patience. I had lulu groomed once professionally and she was scared out of her wits when she came back. I know she is a handful because when I try to bathe her at home she is all over the place. I usually have to wash her with one hand and hold her with the other. I am slowly learning to groom her myself. So the only thing I can suggest is to work a bit then stop and then start again. Also bribing goes a long way. I am now doing a little grooming every time I bathe her. So good luck. The good thing is that your baby is very young...so just keep at it. |
It just takes time for them to get used to it. My Ziggy had a bad experience with a groomer and I started doing it myself. He acted just awful at first and tried to jump out of the sink. But now he loves a bath and the blow dryer. Still not crazy about brushing though.:p Bribing really helps...you can try to reward them with a treat if you can get them to stand still for a few seconds.:D |
grooming Most grooming shops have a stand dryer and a grooming stand and a grooming noose to put around (like a collar) squirmy dogs. I personally WILL NOT go to a groomer!!!!!!! I used to work for one and they are not the nicest people behind closed doors. The shop I worked for was open for years, and the owner is an AKC judge and has some top winning dogs. I personally saw this person beat a new client puppy until blood ran out of its mouth and it fainted. All because the first time to be groomed puppy would not sit still on the table and was afraid of the noise. It is a little expensive, but a god-send to have. Buy yourself a stand dryer and grooming table. It is cheaper than having your pets groomed over their life time. With a stand dryer, you have both hamds free to hold and brush the dog. After a few times, the dog will know what to expect and will be a pleasure to groom. Just a thought. Lynn |

Luckily I got the groomer to let me be in the room with her and Ziggy. She took a wire slicker brush and started roughly brushing Ziggy's behind/rectal area. He was only 14 weeks old and screamed bloody murder. She said he would just have to get used to it...I don't think so. |
2 Attachment(s) HEY. that is not fair :( not all groomers are AWLFUL.. I will work with a puppy I help the new owner understand. That it is not smart to do everything at once to a puppy, or any dog that is scared. it may take a couble of trips. or hours for the puppy can calm or I can love on it in between combing, cutting, bathing. etc.. But for you at home Pet Edge has a cute little dog grooming table you set on your counter. Attachment 138217Attachment 138218 Bathing..get in the tub too combing..comb while she resting, riding in a car any time she is relaxing with you. with in weeks you will see a diffenence around the face..use a tooth brush or your fingers Feet..play with their feet that way they will get used to there feet getting touch legs.. play with them too. touch touch touch they will feel safe (well most dogs anyway) But the most important Give it time |
